Organizational Context and Scope

Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) was founded by five African women Ministers of Education in 1992 with the main objective empowering girls and women across the continent through education.  FAWE Ethiopian Chapter was founded 1994, is one among 34 member chapters of this Pan African Regional network. FAWE Ethiopia works for the causes of girls and women empowerment.  FAWE-E would like to advance girls/women engagement through engaging them at the centre our walks and talks throughout our intervention.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Under the overall supervision of the Executive Director, the Communication Officer will play a key role in supporting FAWE Ethiopia to achieve strategic impact by enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its communication efforts. The officer will work to amplify the visibility and voice of FAWE Ethiopia, showcasing impactful stories at both the national and regional levels.

In this capacity, the Communication Officer will also manage emerging risks, influence key stakeholders, and align communication efforts with FAWE’s broader organizational priorities, with a particular focus on the Ethiopia Chapter. S/he will be responsible for overseeing, guiding, and monitoring all communication activities within the chapter, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in messaging and outreach.

Area of Responsibilities 

  • Strategic Impact & Contribution
  • Develops organizational level communication policy, procedure and strategy and systems
  • Ensure the guideline is in harmony with objectives, goals and values of the organization and standards of FAWE.
  • Plays an integral role in delivering significant increases in the quantity and quality of FAWE media coverage’
  • Ensure consistency in branding of FAWE program/s according to branding guidelines for the program provided and working with internal and external stakeholders to meet resource needs of FAWE Ethiopia.
  • Delivering, posting moments, linked to strategic priorities, particularly girls’ education, program/project, report launches M&E reports/trips.
  • Working closely with program coordinator and IT officer to amplify visibility and voice on stories to popularize FAWE Eth. Seek new ways of improving programme/s intervention for both regional and national significance, including through maximizing reactive opportunities.
  • Pitching directly to use mainstream or social outlets, coordinate pitches to national outlets, improving visibility and influence.
  • Managing media response on social channels, and through mainstream media, ensuring an active and timely
  • reaction to relevant breaking news and stories  in education general, to girls education particular
  • Generating and sharing content on social media that builds and strengthens reach and engagement, helping to make FAW Eth the go-to
  • System, Policies and Procedures and Product Management
    • Leads the production of web content, written materials and design standards and templates
    • Write media briefing documents, Q&As and key messaging, and support the delivering in house communication training for identified participants.
    • Manages media monitoring and coverage and impact analysis
  • Issue Resolutions, Crisis/Risk Management
    • Identify communications spots proactively, reactive on  news opportunities, social media trends and potential crisis and reputational risks takes responsibility for action and manages constructive criticism
  • Communications, Influencing and Coordination
    • Play a key role in rolling out FAWE Eth communications ;  listens and communicates clearly, adapting delivery to the audience
    •  Supporting the program team in understanding and delivering the elements of FAWE’s communication strategy, including driving significant increases in the quantity and quality of media coverage.
    • Taking a leading role in planning and delivering regional and national moments linked to multi-country as well as consortium program/s, major reports and launches.
    • Co-ordinate, write and issue compelling copy for media materials including press releases, statements, opinion pieces and blogs, ensuring accurate and up-to-date messaging at all times.
    • Proactively identify and develop strong stories, feature ideas and reactive opportunities.
    • Develop and pitch story Ideas to Regional/national outlets and coordinate with staffs to pitch to national outlets that have regional reach and influence.
    • Respond to enquiries, working with relevant national or regional communications, program, policy or fundraisings.
    • Work with social and mainstream media to ensure effective media monitoring and produce regular evaluation reports specific to girls education.
    • Use social media platforms to engage with them help to raise the profile of FAWE Eth.

  • Working effectively well with FAWE RS and National chapters  to amplify FAWE Ethiopia visibility and voice on stories with both regional and national significance, including through maximizing reactive opportunities.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues across, holding regular communications to encourage sharing of information and skills sharing.
  • Monitoring and logging PR activities and coverage, and producing email update on FAWE’s latest coverage
  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of PR systems including media monitoring and distribution database.
  • Contributes to a collegial team environment; incorporates gender related needs, perspectives, concerns and promotes equal gender participation.
  • Happy to be part to deal with urgent enquiries and emergencies out of hours and during weekends.
  • Perform relevant task assigned by immediate supervisor.
