We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Capacity Strengthening Director for several upcoming health-related USAID opportunities in Ethiopia. **This position is subject to project award and funder approval and will be based in Ethiopia.

Job summary:

The Capacity Strengthening Director will be responsible for the design, management, implementation, and monitoring of organizational and technical capacity strengthening initiatives for civil society organizations (CSOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other community partners in the project target areas, including developing curricula, organizing and coordinating training activities, designing mentorship schemes, creating job aids, leading workshops, and designing technical assistance delivery schemes. The Capacity Strengthening Director will develop an overall capacity-strengthening strategy for the project. The Capacity Strengthening Advisor will support capacity-development interventions including through the use of capacity building assessment tools.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the self-assessment of local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)/Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other community partners in terms of their technical and organizational capabilities
  • Collaborate with partners to facilitate trainings and work planning for local CSOs/NGOs and other community partners based on assessment results and informed by capacity strengthening approaches
  • Coordinate with other members of the project team to offer technical assistance to develop the capacities of local partner organizations
  • Ensure the participation of local CSOs/NGOs and other community partners in the “Collaborate, learn, and adapt” monitoring process so that they can apply lessons learned and improve the implementation of their activities based on data
  • Manage and work with a team of field coordinators to provide CSOs/NGOs and other community partners with one-on-one mentoring, on-demand technical assistance, learning-by-doing activities, group trainings and building relationships with local government; ensure that CSOs/NGOs and other community partners achieve the objectives set out in the training and work plans
  • Contribute to the development of a system for measuring the performance of CSOs/NGOs and other community partners, including recommendations for the institutionalization of this system within existing local structures
  • Document the successes of partner CSOs/NGOs and other community partners in sharing, communicating, and replicating knowledge

Job Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in social sciences, organizational development, business administration, or a related field
  • A minimum of  10+ years of experience with progressively increasing responsibility in the design and management of complex, large capacity and institution strengthening activities in Ethiopia or other similar environments involving multiple stakeholders
  • Strong understanding and previous experience working with, advising, and providing capacity strengthening to Ethiopian CSOs/NGOs and other local non-state organizations
  • Experience in assessing the technical and organizational capacity of organizations, developing customized capacity strengthening plans, conducting organizational evaluations that cultivate ownership of results and providing individualized training, coaching, and on-site support in various technical areas
  • Demonstrated knowledge of capacity strengthening methodologies at the system, organization, and individual level
  • Demonstrated strong technical, programming, and management skills.
  • Professional training and experience with adult learning methods, training or facilitation, organizational capacity assessments, mapping, and planning
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, knowledge of local languages preferred
