Reach for Change Ethiopia was registered in Ethiopia in 2015 as a Foreign Organization. Our work focuses on women’s economic empowerment, creating sustainable jobs for youths, and building the capacity of local social entrepreneurs.

Position Description

Reach for Change Ethiopia is seeking to recruit a gender advisor with a focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment who can provide strategic support to design and implement gender-transformative women’s economic empowerment programs/projects in Ethiopia for an initial period of one year, with possible extension.

Reporting to the program lead, the expert is the overall responsible for planning, implementing, and managing Reach for Change Ethiopia’s women entrepreneurship development programs/projects and mainstreaming gender in all programs and operating systems.

Furthermore, the gender advisor will develop a global position paper for Reach for Change to help guide the organization in its work on gender and the organization’s added value in this field. She/he will work in close collaboration with the program teams located both at the country and global levels.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic planning support to the Country and Global Team related to Gender Mainstreaming and Women Economic Empowerment (WEE)

  • Review and contribute to Ethiopia and global strategic planning documents and develop RFC gender policies, frameworks, and best practices and ensure they are in place.
  • Provide technical assistance on how to build synergies between WEE and other thematic areas.
  • Review all project scopes of work, training programs, and other written materials in Ethiopia to ensure that gender and women’s economic empowerment is well-integrated.
  • Support the Global and Ethiopia impact team to ensure the RfC M&E system is gender-responsive and includes indicators aimed at capturing the project’s gender and women’s empowerment-related outputs and outcomes;
  • Support the Global and Ethiopia RFC’s communication team in the development of key messages and communications tools to help improve knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to women’s economic empowerment.

Design and deliver capacity development programs

  • Design and implementation of tools and toolkits including gender mainstreaming guidelines and checklists to support gender inclusion and enhance the impact of business services on women both in Ethiopia and at the global level.
  • Design Business Development Support (BDS) programs for women entrepreneurs and women-led SMEs in Ethiopia.
  • Develop and ensure the delivery of high-quality business and entrepreneurship training programs (online, in-person and hybrid training) that are responsive to the needs of the targeted women in Ethiopia.
  • Train RFC staff in Ethiopia and at the global office on gender considerations, and women’s economic empowerment, and provide ongoing support.
  • Coach/mentor entrepreneurship trainers and consultants who work with Reach for Change- Ethiopia to improve the quality of gender-related services
  • Oversee the delivery of all BDS services in Ethiopia i.e in online, in-person, and hybrid formats for women entrepreneurs.
  • Manage, supervise, and coordinate consultants and trainers for the implementation of Reach for Change- Ethiopia Women’s economic empowerment project activities.
  • Ensure that resources necessary for program delivery for Reach for Change- Ethiopia are available and appropriate (including curriculum, trainers, materials, meeting space, etc.)

Knowledge Management and Sharing

  • Produce periodic updates and briefs on country development situations with a focus on women’s entrepreneurship development.
  • Identify and disseminate lessons learnt and good practices in collaboration with Reach for Change country and global program teams.
  • Coordinate cross-country knowledge sharing of technology and innovation for women entrepreneurship development program.

Develop a position paper on gender for Reach for Change globally

  • Review RfC’s best practices on gender in its previous and current work
  • Identify the added value of the organization in this field and recommend the level of ambition (gender-aware, responsive, transformative etc).
  • Based on the above, develop Reach for Change’s global position paper on gender in close collaboration with the Central Program Team and with sign-off by the Global Head of Programs.

Perform any other job-related activities as assigned by his/her supervisor

REPORTING TO: Program Lead Ethiopia

COMMITMENT: one year with possible extension.

START DATE: As soon as possible

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Experience

Education and certification:

Master’s Degree or equivalent in Gender Studies, Economics, Public Administration, business administration, human rights, or a related field in Social Sciences.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience implementing gender and women’s economic empowerment programs.
  • Substantive experience in conducting mentorship training/ workshops/ capacity-building.
  • Experience in leading/managing a team is an asset.

Functional Competencies

  • Strong programme formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation skills
  • Ability to synthesize program performance data and produce analytical reports to inform management and strategic decision-making
  • Strong knowledge of Women’s Economic Empowerment
  • Strong analytical skills

Language

  • Fluency in both spoken and written English and Amharic.
  • Knowledge of other local languages is an asset.
