ROLE PURPOSE:

The Humanitarian Communications and Advocacy Coordinator will support the regular and timely collection and dissemination of humanitarian-related information and content in the Ethiopia country office. This includes, but is not limited to country office humanitarian portfolio data, analysis, and foresight products highlighting particular trends, emergent issues, and emergency response updates in close coordination with humanitarian department colleagues. The role will have a variety of audiences that it will be required to cater to, including but not limited to, internal leadership, the Save the Children Movement at large, and donors.

With the leadership of the Senior Humanitarian Communication and Advocacy manager, the role holder will support the country office in ensuring key deliverables for our humanitarian responses are provided such as communications packs, key messages, situation reports, dashboards, briefings, fact sheets, and other information and communications products as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • In close coordination with the humanitarian team, ensure that there is a calendar for content sourcing, development, and dissemination of timely and high-quality communication and advocacy products on our humanitarian operations
  • Coordinate the development and dissemination of  internal and external communications materials and information management tasks to ensure a platform for member and donor engagement to support Ethiopia country office humanitarian responses
  • Support the country office humanitarian team to produce a wide range of communications, media and information content – complementing with regional level products as appropriate.
  • Screen all humanitarian communications materials for appropriateness and accuracy including adhering to established and understood guidance on red lines.
  • Analyse and effectively communicate complex information to a wider audience
  • Operate on tight deadlines and use independent judgment within agreed parameters
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of information and communications tactics and tools
  • With the support of the Director of ACCM and Senior Humanitarian Communications and Advocacy Manager, Produce and coordinate communications and information materials to build the country office humanitarian response’s visibility and engagement with Save the Children fundraising colleagues, Members, Regional Office/Centre, partners, and relevant stakeholders.

Information and Communications

  • Absorb high volumes of complex, incomplete and often vague information and synthesise into concise, accessible communications products which provide relevant levels of detail and complexity as appropriate for the audience.
  • Produce accurate, clear and consistent coordinated information and communication outputs relating emergency responses across the country – including key messages, Q&A’s, internal email updates, dashboards, factsheets, for media and advocacy work.
  • Adopt a supportive but influencing-based approach to relationships with other relevant teams in the country office to collect and quality information and communication outputs, including sector reports, fact sheets, key messages, and media communications engagement.
  • Social media: work with digital communications lead to regularly supply innovative communications on our humanitarian responses to be used on platforms such as Twitter and Save the Children ‘Workplace’ to reach wider audiences and directly engage supporters in our work
  • Ensure all information for external use presents accurate information and appropriate images, and does not put Save the Children unnecessarily at risk
  • Be available for travel to the field sites to collect case studies and undertake photography commissions and case studies, and coordinate with the photo/film team as well as the Humanitarian Communications team
  • Collaborate closely with Advocacy colleagues to ensure core messaging is consistent when being shared externally.
  • Manage the production of compelling photo stories, case studies and audio-visual materials from the field to highlight the country office’s humanitarian work, including the commissioning of photography and film when required and in line with SCI policies and procedures (all consent on file and available). Ensure branding and visibility in the materials.
  • Determine how to use various different materials through different communications channels (print, web page, social media, radio, television)
  • Evaluate results and impact of media and communications activities.
  • Ensures adherence to policy and procedure and that the rights of families and children are respected in all materials produced and disseminated (voice, photo, video, written).

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, project coordination, information management or related field. At least three years of  experience in similar roles

QUALIFICATIONS  AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Education to BSc/BA level in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience
  • Proven experience of developing and managing the production of communications materials for similar organisations in fast-paced environment involving a range of stakeholders
  • Can produce accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to both programme support and humanitarian situation – including key messages, Q&A’s and factsheets, case studies, press releases, media statements, briefs amongst others
  • Evidence of excellent English verbal and written communication skills for a wide range of different audiences including donors, journalists and the ‘general public’. Ability to strategically target a wide range of audiences is essential.
  • Understanding of the humanitarian context in Ethiopia
  • Excellent relationship building skills in order to work across all functions and various Members
  • The ability to support the communications team in high-pressure situations, with changing deadlines and priorities, and in a complex humanitarian situation;
  • Experience in leading information and communication flows between emergency responses and a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to work with communities and partners to gather case studies, testimonies and information on the humanitarian situation and on programmes.
  • Excellent IT skills, especially in Microsoft Word, technical aptitude in MS Office.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.  Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy;
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritise an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with limited support;
  • Ability to fact check, proofread, edit and draft materials;
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult working circumstances.
  • Commitment and interest in Save the Children’s mission, vision and values. In particular, a good understanding of Save the Children mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support

Desirable

  • Prior experience working in humanitarian operations in a similar role
  • Photo editing and graphic design skills. Experience with design and audio-visual software is an advantage;
  • Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder projects, presentations
