The Livestock Value Chain advisor is based in Feed the Future Ethiopia Value Chain Activity (FTFE-VCA) headquarters in Addis Abba, Ethiopia with frequent travel to the field and reports to the Chief of Party.  He/she will oversee the development of livestock (meat and live animals, dairy and poultry) value chain strategies. In addition to the specific tasks stated below, he/she is expected to contribute fully as a program team member, conducting him/herself in a proper manner at all times as representative of the activity and is responsible for the safe keeping and care of all activity assets assigned to him/her.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the livestock portfolio of the FTFE-VCA, providing strategic and tactical support to ensure successful implementation of the value chain activities;
  • Support the Chief of Party (COP) and DCOP-Technical in the technical management of FTFE-VCA, focusing on the development of livestock value chain strategies to achieve program objectives;
  • Support the COP and DCOP-Technical with strategic planning, stakeholder coordination and developing activity partnerships targeting the private sector;
  • Conduct supervisory visits with regional teams to provide technical and supervisory support and monitor progress against targets;
  • Supervise the technical implementation of partners and legacy projects within the livestock value chain component, monitoring progress and working with value chain specialists to adjust strategies and interventions as needed;
  • Identify short-term technical services required for the successful implementation of the livestock value chain component of this contract, including preparation of scopes of work, budgets and assisting as needed in the recruitment of short-term consultants;
  • Provide inputs for work plans and budgets, quarter and monthly reports, program success stories, etc. as required;
  • Supervise the livestock value chain technical team to ensure the delivery of high quality technical services in consultation with the regional teams;
  • Serve as an ambassador for the activity with USAID and other donors, Ethiopian government officials and stakeholders including but not limited to representatives of the Agricultural Growth Program (AGP) and the Ministry of Agriculture;
  • Perform any other duties as may be required by the COP.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in related field of study from a recognized University;
  • More than 10 years of experience within livestock agri-business and private sector development, value chain analysis and value addition directly relevant to dairy, poultry, meat and live animal.
  • Clear understanding of the farming community and extensive work experience within a commercial or Development contractor environment, preferably with experience working within USAID projects; at least 3 years is in a management position;
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to work with minimum supervision in order to meet changing deadlines;
  • Good analytical and writing skills with the ability to synthesise and integrate data into reports;
  • Excellent team building and organizational skills together with the ability to interact across a multi-cultural environment;
  • Fluent in English, Amharic and other local language;
