Background

The Institute for Peace and Security is looking for a talented project coordinator for the research project “Assessing the impact of the African Union’s “African Peace and Security Architecture – 2017-2018”, which will take place in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM). ECDPM’s Conflict, Security and Resilience Programme (SECURE) has been supporting GIZ in preparing baseline reports regarding the operationalisation and work of the African Peace and Security Architecture.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will primarily work on the implementation of the research project “Assessing the impact of the African Union’s “African Peace and Security Architecture”. The focus will be on the role played by the African Union and Regional actors in dealing with conflicts and crises in a number of African countries. Particular attention will be given to means of diplomacy, mediation, peace support operations and post-conflict reconstruction and development. In a first phase for implementing this project, the incumbent will work as part of the IPSS in close coordination with the project officer from ECDPM, which will be embedded at the IPSS

Objective

In particular, the objective for the incumbent will be to familiarize extensively with the APSA Impact Assessment project’s methodology, contribute to the finalization of the deliverables as spelt out in the APSA Monitoring project’s offer and Terms of Reference (ToRs) and work plan, and contribute to drafting the annual APSA Impact Report.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

·        Support and help coordinate the APSA Impact Assessment team in delivering on research results and preparing the draft and final deliverables

·        Provide targeted research support when requested towards the finalization of project deliverables

·        Contribute to the drafting of the Annual APSA impact report

·        Supporting the project leader in developing the APSA Impact Assessment methodology and annual reports

Job Requirements

Qualifications

·        A Master degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, e.g. development economics, international relations, conflict studies and/or social sciences.

·        Proven ability to support policy research and proven exposure to an academic research environment.

·        Proven interest in international development cooperation and peace and security in Africa.

·        Excellent command of English is required. Good working knowledge of French is desirable.

·        Able to organize work processes well and to work according to set time frames.

·        Ability to deliver on assignments in an autonomous manner; pro-active in seeking guidance if and when required.

Duration

One year with a possibility of renewal.
