Max Foundation is a fast growing non-profit organisation (www.maxfoundation.org) founded in the Netherlands in 2005 by Joke and Steven Le Poole, following the death of their son Max who died from a viral infection at eight months. Steven and Joke were determined to spare other parents such deep sorrow. They wanted to give as many children as possible the future that Max was not able to have.

The mission of Max Foundation is to give children a healthy start in life and save as many children’s lives as possible in the most effective and sustainable way. Max Foundation believes that a business driven and integrated approach can tackle the roots of child mortality and impaired child growth. And that this is best done through collectively addressing practices in the areas of WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Nutrition and Sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR). We aim to be as effective and as sustainable as possible via proven and innovative approaches on community strengthening, institutional embedding and sustainable market models.

Max Foundation Ethiopia is recruiting two project officer in the ‘FINISH Mondial Programme’ in Ethiopia.  FINISH stands for ‘Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation & Health’ and aims for sanitation for all through an integrated model that adresses both the demand and supply side of the sanitation challenge.

Purpose of the position

The Project Field Officers will be tasked to follow up the construction of household and institutional sanitation systems and provide technical assistant to artisans and MSEs on construction of improved sanitation facilities. For households that construct sanitation facilities through micro-credit, the project field officer is responsible to link households with financial institutions and follow up the loan issuing process.

Job description

Technical Responsibility and support:

  • Liaising with cluster team including community health volunteers, and sanitation marketers in the identification of local masons and other technical skill sets such as plumbers, carpenters for training in the construction of FINISH specific appropriate sanitation systems
  • Do a needs analysis of the required masons and other skillset to facilitate the construction of sanitation systems as per the FINISH approved models; identifying the existing gaps and assist the project manager in drawing a plan to close these gaps through training, mentorship and the required coaching.
  • Facilitate the training of masons in line with the workplan ensuring the tenets of FINISH masons’ trainings on cost effectiveness and high-quality standards are maintained.
  • Assist in the selection and customized layout of appropriate sanitation systems for the customers (households and institutions)
  • Provide technical support in demand creation. construction and installation of sanitation systems
  • Support into the technical capacity building of artisans and other entrepreneurs for the supply side development of sanitation
  • Cluster demand to enable vendors make efficient delivery of construction materials.
  • Quality check/Verify that sanitation systems construction works done by partners and contractors are carried out according to quality standards established by FINISH through quality checks.
  • Identify sanitation entrepreneurs in the county(s) of operation operating businesses that fall under the sanitation service and/ or value chain to supply materials and skills set to facilitate the increased uptake of sanitation systems in the county.
  • Perform tasks assigned by his line manager related to his role

Sanitation financing and Inclusion:

  • Identify suitable financial institution and link households which are eligible for sanitation loans
  • Identify additional suitable local FI partners in the districts
  • Support in the formation of groups for sanitation entrepreneurs, artisans and/ or households to support in the financial inclusion component through group-based lending
  • On a regular basis, daily or weekly , have a direct liaison with the FINISH Mondial partner financial institutions in the assigned district, gathering information on the progress of the sanitation loans, pursuing leads jointly with the financial partner loan officers and providing the technical expertise to clients identified by the banks for sanitation loans.
  • Attend client and group meeting occasionally with the financial partners loan officer to market the sanitation products and provide, in partnership with the loan officer, the financial options available to finance the sanitation system
  • Follow up on sanitation loans processed
  • Report on sanitation systems issued through loans by the partner FIs

Project Management:

  • Prepare weekly and monthly plans
  • Participate in monthly cluster implementation team meetings
  • Participate in sector meetings related to this role
  • Quickly analyse the context change and forge partnership with others related to his role
  • Perform other activities assigned by the line manager related to his role

Job Requirements

Education and year of experience:

  • Bachler Degree in Environmental Health, sanitary Engineering, and relevant trainings
  • Two years of relevant work experience
  • Experience with NGO is of an advantage

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Amharic.
  • Computer skill
  • Motor bike driving license
  • Aself-starter and can work with minimum supervision
  • Open and eager to learn new ideas and concepts
  • Willing to work in strict deadlines
