The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established on 8th of July 1935 and is a pioneer humanitarian organization that provides emergency and development services to the people of Ethiopia who are vulnerable to and affected by manmade or natural disasters without discriminating against their race, color, nationality, sex, religion, or political outlook. In the same year, ERCS was recognized by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) and admitted as the 48th member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent. Its vision is to be a strong, self-reliant and the most efficient humanitarian organization in Ethiopia in reaching the most vulnerable. Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to contribute to the wellbeing of mankind and prevalence of peace. Since its establishment, the National Society has been actively engaged in lifesaving and community resilience building activities across major areas including food security and disaster preparedness/response, health and health related initiatives and the promotion of humanitarian values. Following the recurrent drought, Increased chronic food insecurity and increased natural and manmade disasters ERCS is regularly trying to strengthen its capacity to address the above issues. Thus, ERCS is inviting applications from internal/external qualified staffs that can fulfill the requirements of the post to fill the following vacancy that exist at Jigjiga, Somali Region of Ethiopia.

Job Title: Project Officer (WASH, Health Promotion)

Duty Station: Gode

Terms of Employment:- Contract for 6 Months only

Report to: Regional Project Coordinator

Salary: As per the organizations scale

Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Regional Project Coordinator, the Project Officer ensures effective implementation of WASH, Health Promotion, activities in alignment with ERCS regulations. The role involves field-level coordination, community engagement, technical oversight, and reporting to achieve project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Implementation
    • Conduct WASH and Health technical feasibility studies, and beneficiary targeting through surveys, focus group discussions, and site visits.
    • Oversee rehabilitation/construction of WASH infrastructures (public water systems, latrines, irrigation schemes, etc) and ensure compliance with quality standards.
    • Supervise the rehabilitation/renovation of health centers
    • Facilitating the diseases and nutrition surveillance, and vaccination campaigns
    • Organize hygiene promotion campaigns, capacity-building trainings, and awareness sessions on WASH, health and nutrition.
    • Supervise distribution of hygiene kits, water treatment supplies, and materials, and ensuring adherence to targeting criteria.
    • Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and stakeholders to ensure program integration and sustainability.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL)
    • Monitor project progress against indicators using ERCS/NLRC quality checklists.
    • Support MEAL unit in baseline/post-distribution assessments and maintain updated beneficiary databases.
    • Document lessons learned and share reports with stakeholders promptly.
  • Reporting
    • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual activity plans/reports.
    • Maintain accurate records of project data, including construction progress, distributions, and training outcomes.
  • Cross-Cutting Integration
    • Ensure gender, disability, child protection, and environmental considerations are mainstreamed in activities.
    • Promote community participation to enhance project sustainability.
About You

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential
    • Education: Bachelor’s degree/Master’s Degree/ in WASH, Environmental/Public Health, Irrigation, DRM, Environmental/Public Health, or related fields.
    • Experience: Minimum 5 years (including 3 years in humanitarian WASH/ Health projects).
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in project design, WASH and Health support, and behavior change initiatives.
    • Strong knowledge of SPHERE standards and humanitarian principles.
    • Excellent communication in English and local languages (e.g., Somali).
    • Advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Desired
    • Experience in high-pressure environments with tight deadlines.
    • Ability to write detailed reports and build relationships across diverse teams.
    • Commitment to ERCS’s mission and principles.
