INTRODUCTION
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender-based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The protection officer, under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader is responsible for the implementation of various protection activities within the project framework. These include community awareness raising, identification of IPA beneficiaries and follow up of cases, facilitating capacity building training to community-based structures/ community-based protection committees and conducting community group meetings, conducting PSS activities, and engaging in information dissemination through the mobile protection desk. Additionally, the position is expected to contribute to other protection activities that DRC is implementing within the project framework according to capacity and direction from the Protection Team Leader.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Programming & Operations
- Develop a work plan for the implementation of community-based protection activities within the framework of the project;
- Establish/ strengthen community-based groups, provide relevant protection trainings, and conduct regular meetings;
- Carry out protection information dissemination through the mobile protection desk;
- Provide referral service to individuals with specific need to relevant services;
- Identify IPA beneficiaries and follow up the cases;
- Support the psychosocial support activities to be implemented through the safe space program;
- Coordinate with finance, supply chain, administration, and any relevant department to ensure the smooth flow of community-based protection activities;
- Carry out any additional protection activities as assigned from the protection Team Leader;
Reporting
- Prepare and submit report on progress on community-based protection activities to protection Team Leader;
- Ensure up to date keeping of all data and documents under the responsibility of the position.
Coordination
- Represent DRC in engagement with the target community and their representatives, local gov’t structures, humanitarian agencies operating in the target area with the guidance and leadership of the protection Team Leader;
- Collaborate with DRC country protection program, Ethiopia migration program, and other DRC sectorial programs towards integrated programming.

Job Requirements
- University degree in law, social work, social science or other relevant field of study from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an entry to mid-level position, with experience in the field of protection in a humanitarian response working for an international NGO, UN agency or relevant ministry or local authority;
- Technical understanding of core protection concepts, prevention and response strategies in line with best practices;
- Experience planning and facilitating community awareness sessions, trainings, and workshops in protection related topics;
- Experience in identifying and responding to needs of particular vulnerable individuals of people of concern based on protection risks, age, gender, and diversity analysis, and/ or other criteria;
- Strong planning, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team;
- Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure;
- Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures;
- Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English and Amharic required;
- Proficiency in Tigregna is desired.
