Project – Rigorous Evidence on Abiding Outcome of Social and Behavioral Changes on CM and FGM in Ethiopia (REACH)

The Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli – International Committee for the Development of Peoples (CISP) is a non-governmental international organization established in 1983 in Italy. CISP has been operating in Ethiopia since 1986 and since then has always been alongside local institutions and communities to face humanitarian emergencies and lay the foundations for the consolidation of long-term development processes.

 In the last 35 years in Ethiopia CISP has been implementing more than 200 multi-sectoral and multi-regional projects, mainly in the sectors of food security and rural development, Livelihood, WASH, Education, Health, Migration, Protection, CMDRR, and Emergency and Rehabilitation in Oromia, Tigray, Benishangul Gumuz, Somali, Afar regions and Addis Ababa City Administration. In all projects, CISP set gender, children, and environment either mainstream or as cross-cutting issues.

 UNICEF in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth (MoWCY) and UNFPA intervention that focused on reducing Harmful traditional practices including Child Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation and social and behavioral change programs in Ethiopia. In line of this program, CISP in partnership with John Hopkins University (JHU) is planning to conduct a baseline, midline and terminal survey to strengthen program benchmarking and produce the rigorous evidence needed in intermediate and long term outcomes inform continuous improvement of the programs. To undertake the baseline survey CISP is interested to higher research assistants in temporary terms who will manage the data collection at field level.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The research assistant will collect both qualitative and quantitative data and work closely with the supervisor to prepare for, schedule, and conduct interviews, and in-depth interviews with community members and key informants for gather baseline information for FGM and ECM programs.

The enumerator occupies the central position in the survey because he/she collects information from respondents. Therefore, the success of the survey depends on the quality of each interviewer’s work.

  • Fully Attend trainings organized by the organization
  • Pre-test the survey instruments.
  • Interviewing all eligible respondents in the community and key informants on the field
  • Checking completed questionnaires to be sure that all questions were asked and the responses neatly and legibly recorded,
  • Collect data as per protocol, including following skip patterns, and asking questions as instructed
  • Maintain good team spirit with team members
  • Report all best practices and challenges to the supervisor
  • Forward to the supervisor all completed questionnaires daily
  •  He/she will maintain all procedures of data quality and ethical requirements, arranging convenient interview settings, obtaining consents, conducting excellent interviews and proper management of audio records.

Place of work: Oromia, SNNPR, Gambella, Afar, Amhara and Somali Region

Line of responsibility: the RA is responsible to the Research Coordinator with overall supervision of the CISP Country Program manager,

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATION & PREFERENCE

  • B.Sc. in Health Field or Social Science, demography, statistics
  • Prior experience of data collection

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative data collection.
  • Familiar with conducting social surveys and collecting data on tablets/smart phones; especially experience with KOBO is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the data collection areas you are applying for
  • Good written and spoken knowledge of local language and culture of the region you are applying for,
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Ability to feel comfortable working independently.
  • Willingness and able to travel (physical fitness and stamina) rural areas,
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills.
