Researcher, African Peace and Security Governance Programme 65 views

The ISS seeks a dynamic researcher with strong project coordination skills to join the African Peace and Security Governance (APSG) Programme in ISS Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Applicants must be familiar with human security in Africa and have experience managing multiple projects across different thematic areas. They should be passionate about working with high-level government representatives and development partners.

The researcher will support the Programme Head in implementing roundtables, capacity building workshops, seminars and briefings. Applicants must be highly motivated, independent thinkers with an ability to multi-task. The position requires an ability to work under pressure, identify new opportunities and execute projects in a sensitive and adaptable way. The researcher will report to the APSG Programme Head.

Overview of duties 

  • Provide inputs into the research agenda and knowledge products of APSG
  • Undertake research and develop concept notes under the guidance of the programme head and in line with programme and ISS Addis Ababa office priorities
  • Coordinate the implementation of multiple projects, including day-to-day oversight of activities in line with workplans, as well as overall project planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting
  • Coordinate the development of the annual programme workplan in line with donor agreements and the ISS Results Based Framework
  • Coordinate ISS’ support to regional governments and continental initiatives in the form of technical support, dialogue facilitation, seminars and other capacity-building engagements
  • Maintain proactive relationships with key partners and relevant regional and international organisations
  • Implement effective monitoring and evaluation plans for projects and ensure that monitoring data is collected throughout the project cycle, including objective means to demonstrate results
  • Ensure effective communication of results to target audiences in accordance with the planned communication strategies and donor reporting requirements
  • Identify new fundraising opportunities, write concept notes, policy briefs, ISS Today articles, funding proposals, activity reports and budgets in support of the programme head

The contract will be for two years, and may be renewed subject to programme requirements, funding and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline; a diploma in project management will be desirable
  • At least five years relevant work experience in a policy, research, government, training or other relevant professional environment
  • Experience in proposal development, project planning, events organisation and the ability to work on several complex processes simultaneously
  • Good project management, coordination and report writing skills
  • Experience in communicating project results and monitoring and evaluation of projects/programmes
  • Knowledge and understanding of results-based management and reporting
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Understanding of the thematic areas of the projects, and an ability to work in cooperation with governments and civil society
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
