Background

BBC Media Action is an International NGO working in Ethiopia since 2001 as a registered charity with the Charities and Societies Agency (CSA) under registration number 1118 and Ministry of Communication under a bilateral agreement. BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in countries around the world. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. In Ethiopia we predominantly work on health, migration and resilience building focused mass media projects.

BBC Media Action is leading an international consortium to support media sustainability and media reform in three countries, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Sierra Leone.  The Consortium consists of BBC Media Action, Free Press Unlimited, International Media Support and Media Development Investment Fund.  It is called PRIMED, Protecting Independent Media for Effective Development programme and is funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

Primed seeks to support healthier information ecosystems where a steady flow of trusted public interest media content is more freely and widely available. To this aim, it works to improve the capacity of participating media outlets to manage their organizations and deliver public interest content.

Objectives

BBC Media Action is looking to engage a consultancy firm or individual consultant to support one of its PRIMED partner media organizations, Mensh Production (producer of MAMA Africa program on Arts TV) with business development. The consultant will develop the existing business strategies of Mensh in order to boost revenue while also building internal capacity. Accordingly, the primary duties of the consultant will be to identify and help pursue opportunities for revenue and content diversification and help build internal capacities in business development.

Initial engagement of the consultant will be for three months but will be extended based on assessment of progress.

Key responsibilities:

  • Creating and supporting the implementation of effective marketing strategies, including social media marketing
  • Developing new products and services to meet the needs of both audiences and potential advertisers
  • Identifying and pursuing new business opportunities
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with business stakeholders, including NGOs and public/government institutions that focus on gender issues
  • Training and/or coaching the staff responsible for business development

Deliverables

  • Intermediate and a final report
  • Marketing strategy and business development Proposals
  • List of key contacts of potential partners and advertisers and recommendations

Job Requirements

Required capabilities from the consultant

  • Previous experience in sales, marketing and/or business development, preferably in the media sector
  • Good understanding of digital media, including social media monetization criteria
  • Deep understanding of country context and familiarity with politics, society, market and media
  • Previous experience of conducting capacity-strengthening activities is desirable
