The Carter Center is a not-for-profit international NGO committed to waging peace, fighting disease and building hope worldwide. The Carter Center country office in Ethiopia, which assists the Government of Ethiopia in Disease Elimination and Eradication Programs, is looking for a qualified professional to fill the following vacancy for its Guinea Worm Eradication Program.
Summary of Job Description:
He/she will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Collects, updates, analyzes, and maintains information required to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate program activities and conduct risk assessment and analysis to identify villages and kebeles at risk of receiving imported cases and intensify surveillance and awareness raising activities.
- Develops and revises annual, quarterly, and monthly work plans with detail activities, targets, budgets, and indicators, and ensures effective and efficient implementation and operations.
- Conducts and supports health education and awareness raising activities through household visits as well as in schools, markets, places of worship and other places where people congregate.
- Organizes and conducts video shows and cash reward announcements, and ensures distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and placement of Guinea worm disease (GWD) and reward posters and banners in health facilities, schools, offices, markets, villages, places of worship, and other places where people congregate.
- Conducts active case search, including through household visits as well as in schools, markets, places of worship, and other places where people congregate.
- Coordinates, facilitates, and supports GWD case search as part the existing public health programs, such as immunization, mass drug administration, malaria chemoprevention, and other campaigns.
- Facilitates and supports timely submission of weekly Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) reports that incorporated GWD from health posts to health centers, and from health centers and hospitals to district health offices.
- Conducts weekly review and analysis of IDSR reports and monthly health management information system reports to verify the presence or absence of any suspected case of GWD.
- Registers and investigates all rumors and suspected cases of GWD within 24 hours of receiving reports. If clinically confirmed case is detected, carries out activities detailed in the standard operating procedures.
- Organizes and conducts trainings for and supervises health and non-health staff and community volunteers to carry out and document GWD surveillance and awareness raising activities.
- Conducts sensitization sessions trainings, workshops, and meetings organized by various governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
- Ensures appropriate documentation of GWD surveillance and other program activities. Ensures availability of essential documents and reports for eventual certification.
- Conducts periodic awareness surveys in order to monitor public awareness of GWD, its prevention, and the correct amount of cash reward for reporting cases.
- Supports, mentors, and supervises Assistant Woreda Officers, and carries out other performance management activities as per organization policies and guidelines.
- Requests and ensures proper management and use of equipment, supplies, transportation, financial, and other resources adhering to the organization’s policies and guidelines.
- Builds and maintains good working relationships with district health office, health facility, local administration, government sector office staff, and community leaders.
Terms of Employment: One-year contract with a possibility of extension.

Job Requirements
Qualification and Experience:
- BSc in Environmental Health or related fields
- Minimum of four years of relevant experience
Additional/Desired Requirements:
Candidate should:
- Demonstrate ability and understanding of fieldwork and community-directed programs.
- Be creative and have the ability to work as part of a team.
- Have a good command of spoken and written English.
- Be fluent in local language of the duty station.
- Be able and willing to walk long distances and work and live in remote locations with minimal supervision.
- Previous NGO experience is an advantage.
