About the Job

Job Purpose

The Community Development Coordinator will support the Kurmuk Gold Mine in the development and implementation of its community development strategy. This role will ensure the identification and prioritization of community development projects with the engagement of the community and local government authorities. Community Development operations adhere to relevant social and community standards, foster positive relationships with local stakeholders, and mitigate potential social risks. The coordinator will work closely with the Social Performance Superintendent to monitor, report, and enhance the social impact of community development activities.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local communities, government entities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to partner in community development engagements.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and communication with local communities to address concerns and provide updates on community development activities.
  • Assist in the implementation of grievance mechanisms and ensure timely resolution of community development issues.
  • Keep records of stakeholders’ Engagement activities including minutes of meetings, pictures, and videos regarding community development.

Community Development

  • Support the planning and execution of community development programs in alignment with the mine’s social performance strategy.
  • Identify opportunities for local employment and support small business initiatives to enhance local economic development.
  • Collaborate with local leaders and community groups to design sustainable social and economic programs.

Social Risk Management

  • Monitor and identify potential social risks associated with mining operations and report findings to the Social Performance Superintendent.
  • Assist in the development of social impact assessments and ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory social performance standards.
  • Implement mitigation measures to minimize the negative social impacts of mining activities.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure that the mine’s social performance activities comply with local, national, and international standards and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit reports on community relations, stakeholder engagement, and social performance metrics as required by the company and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in auditing social performance activities and updating policies to reflect best practices.

Capacity Building and Training

  • Provide training and capacity-building initiatives for internal staff and local community members on community development topics.
  • Support efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and local workforce development within the community and mining operations.

Grievance Handling & Conflict Resolution

  • Manage the grievance mechanism, ensuring grievances are logged, addressed, and resolved in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist in the mediation and resolution of conflicts between mine and the community, ensuring peaceful and mutually beneficial outcomes.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Work closely with other departments such as Health, Safety, Environment, and Human Resources to align social performance goals with operational objectives.
  • Coordinate with external consultants and third-party contractors engaged in social performance initiatives.

About You

Qualifications & Experience:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Economics, Development Studies, or a related field.

Experience

  • 2 years of experience in social performance, community relations, or sustainable development, preferably in the mining, oil & gas, or infrastructure industries.
    • Experience working in rural or remote settings and experience or willingness to camp life is highly advantageous.
    • Female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and community grievance management.
  • Understanding of social risk assessments and community development strategies.
  • Computer literate: manage Microsoft Office and use the internet.
  • Proficiency in Amharic and English (written and spoken).
