PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Strengthening Education Mining (STEM) project aims to increase the number of Ethiopian men and women with relevant skills and qualifications for work in the mining sector. The project’s goals are to strengthen university and technical vocational institutional capacity to produce skilled and qualified graduates that have relevant technical and environmental skills and knowledge for the mining sector; to improve the instructional capacity of university/ Technical Vocational Education Training TVET instructors; and to ensure that artisanal mining cooperatives and community members, especially women living in and around mining sites, have the appropriate skills and abilities to benefit from employment opportunities resulting from mining activities.
PROJECT AND CONTRACT PERIOD
The STEM project is a six-year project, in operation from January 2017 to April 2023. The driver is a full-time position for a period of 10-month ending September 30th, 2022
SCOPE OF WORK
Under the guidance and supervision of the East Guji Coordinator, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to STEM staff, short-term experts and visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. The driver is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the assigned STEM vehicle as per technical guidance and specifications established by the organization. The driver is also responsible to pick-up and delivers assigned messages and documentation.
General Responsibilities
The duties of the project driver include, but are not limited to:
- Provision of reliable and secure driving services to the project staff, visitors, and short-term experts
- Maintenance of the STEM Project vehicle, including regular check-ups, oil change, washing and gas filling.
- Secures vehicle equipment and ensures that the vehicle is securely parked and locked when not used. Keys are safely stored each night in agreed upon place.
- Maintain records of vehicle usage (including fuel consumption, mileage, and trip logs) and observes all company vehicle utilization policies and country traffic laws.
- Responsible for daily up-keep and cleaning of project vehicles, scheduling routine maintenance, and ensuring readiness of the vehicle for transport service by checking oil, water, fuel, tires and other parts of the vehicle prior to driving.
- Record all servicing and repairs received in the “service and repair book” provided for the assigned vehicle.
- Ensure that the vehicle is equipped with a First Aid Kit, spare tire, working flashlight and batteries, vehicle jack, wheel brace and a tool kit (wrench, patch kit etc.)
- Ensure that the current version of the project-specific Medical Emergency Evacuation Plan must be always carried in the vehicle.
- Perform project routine business, such as receiving and delivering official project documentation and items as requested.
- Perform any other duties as requested to support the running of the project office.
The project driver must also ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers in vehicle by adhering to the following policies:
- Hold valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
- Never exceed the posted speed limit.
- Report any accidents to police in a timely fashion. Project manager must be notified.
- Ensure that all loads being carried, whether passenger or cargo, is within vehicle limitations.
- Ensure that no unauthorized persons travel in a vehicle without prior approval.
- Ensure that all travel and vehicle documents are kept secure in the assigned vehicle.
- Never speak on a cell phone while driving.
- Wear a seatbelt and ensure that all passengers are wearing safety belts while in the project vehicle.
- −Ensuring that smoking is never permitted in the project vehicle.

LEVEL OF EFFORT: 10-month contract beginning on December 1, 2021
Job Requirements
- Completion of 10th Grade
- Minimum 3 years of previous job experience driving 4×4 vehicles in various road conditions as well as mechanic experience in maintain vehicles and carrying out minor repairs
- Valid 3rd Grade Driving License, clean driving record, knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair.
- Experience driving on East Guji main roads as well as mining and tabia secondary roads
- Good knowledge of Oromo and English. An oral English test may be required.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
