The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ethiopia Chapter boasts a rich history rooted in a visionary commitment to gender equity in education. Established in 1994, just two years after the founding of FAWE Africa, FAWE Ethiopia emerged as part of a transformative continental movement led by five pioneering African women ministers and deputy ministers of education. Dr. Genet Zewdie, Ethiopia’s former Minister of Education, played a pivotal role in founding the chapter.

From its inception, FAWE Ethiopia has been unwavering in its mission to promote gender equality in education nationwide. As an integral member of a broader network spanning 34 chapters across Sub-Saharan Africa, the chapter has actively collaborated with government entities, local communities, schools, and international organizations to foster an inclusive educational environment.

Job Summary 

FAWE Ethiopia seek to recruit a high caliber gender Specialist. The Gender Specialist will be responsible for leading the gender-focused aspects of FAWE Ethiopia program/s. This position requires the development, implementation, and monitoring of gender-responsive strategies to ensure that all program components address the specific needs and challenges of girls and marginalized groups in education and support the capacity building of consortium partners and local implementing partners. The specialist will work closely with FAWE Ethiopia staff, program partners, stakeholders, and communities to promote gender equality and inclusive education. This job description outlines the key duties and qualifications required for the Gender specialist   – at FAWE Ethiopia. Responsibilities may evolve as program needs develop.

Contract Type: This is a full-time role with a renewable contract subject to performance and program funding. One-year performance-based contract with potential for extension.

The Gender Specialist will be based  in FAWE Ethiopia Chapter, Addis Ababa with frequent travel to project sites within Ethiopia.

About You

Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Program Design and Implementation

  • Lead the design, planning, and implementation of gender-responsive interventions within the MYRP
  • Ensure that all program components, including education and protection services, integrate gender perspectives.
  • Provide technical guidance on gender equality and women’s empowerment to FAWE Ethiopia staff, partners, and government counterparts.
  • Develop and adapt tools and resources to ensure gender-sensitive programming, including curricula, training materials, and community outreach strategies.
  • Coordinate with FAWE Ethiopia office and other ECW partners to align gender-related activities with overall program objectives.
  • Conduct Gender Analysis to ECW partners to create baseline
  • Develop/Revise FAWE Ethiopia Gender Policy

2. Capacity Building and Training

  • Lead gender-related capacity-building initiatives for program staff, implementing partners, teachers, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct gender training workshops on gender equity, inclusive education, and gender-sensitive pedagogy.
  • Develop training materials that address the specific educational needs of girls and marginalized groups, particularly in crisis and conflict-affected areas.

3. Gender Mainstreaming

  • Ensure gender mainstreaming across all project activities, ensuring that gender is integrated into all aspects of planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Work with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team to incorporate gender-sensitive indicators and ensure gender-disaggregated data collection.
  • Conduct gender assessments and audits to identify gaps and challenges in program implementation and propose recommendations for improvement.

4. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of gender-related interventions within the ECW program.
  • Collaborate with the M&E team to track progress against gender indicators and ensure compliance with donor reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and submit gender-related reports, case studies, and success stories to FAWE and donor agencies, highlighting achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.
  • Analyze data to inform gender-responsive programming decisions and provide strategic recommendations for improvement.

5. Advocacy and Partnership

  • Serve as FAWE Ethiopia’s gender focal point in meetings, conferences, and advocacy platforms related to education and gender equity.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations to promote gender equality and girls’ education.
  • Advocate for gender-responsive policies and practices within the ECW program and the broader education sector.
  • Engage with communities and stakeholders to raise awareness about gender issues in education and promote the active participation of girls in school.

6. Collaboration and Communication

  • Coordinate closely with the FAWE Ethiopia team and ECW consortium partners to ensure smooth implementation of gender-related activities.
  • Communicate regularly with local authorities, community leaders, and school administrators to ensure gender-sensitive approaches are embraced at all levels.
  • Build relationships with donors, government officials, and civil society organizations to enhance support for gender-focused initiatives in education.
  • Perform related activities assigned by immediate supervisor.
