The Role
The Grade Control Sampler/ Pit & Run-off Mine Spotter ensures that material sent to the crusher is of the appropriate economic grade and that large fluctuations in grade are minimized and provides accurate, real-time data that maximizes economic recovery and minimizes dilution (mixing of ore with waste). Role is collection, packing, labelling and managing of samples collected at the RC rig during drilling operation. The sample data is critical input for analytical process and ultimately the primary input to volume and quality estimations of ore for processing.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Duties
- Collect samples from drill cuttings produced by Reverse Circulation (RC) and down-the-hole drilling rigs
- Process samples using appropriate techniques (splitting, reducing, bagging, and labeling) while avoiding contamination
- Implement QA/QC procedures by inserting standards, blanks, and duplicates into the sampling stream
- Assist in marking ore and waste boundaries on the pit floor based on geological data
- Accurately record sample locations, depths, and results in company systems
- Ensure strict compliance with mine safety standards and procedures
Additional Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment
- Participate in risk assessments and safety inspections
- Report hazards, risks, and incidents promptly
- Support production targets while minimizing cost and wastage
- Ensure compliance with company policies, mining regulations, and safety standards (e.g., OHSAS 18001)
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- BSc or MSc in Geology, Mining, or a related technical field from recognized Institution and Formal training in sampling techniques, grade control procedures, or geological mapping is an advantage
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in mining, cement, or heavy industry
- Experience in open-pit mining operations is preferred
- Hands-on experience in grade control, drilling, and sampling is a strong advantage
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of sample handling, storage, and data management
- Knowledge of mining safety regulations and industry standards
- Familiarity with geological or mining software
- Good numerical and analytical skills
- Strong communication skills in English and Amharic other language proficiency is an advantage
- Problem-solving ability in grade control operations
