Job Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist in the Core Laboratory performs a wide range of complex laboratory tests and procedures on various biological specimens to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease. This role requires a strong understanding of laboratory principles, techniques, quality control, and the ability to work efficiently in a high-throughput environment while maintaining accuracy and adhering to established protocols. The MLS/MT will be proficient in multiple disciplines within the core lab and will contribute to the overall quality and efficiency of laboratory services.
Key Responsibilities:
• Performs a broad range of laboratory tests and procedures across various core laboratory disciplines, which may include:
o Clinical Chemistry: Analyzing blood and other body fluids for chemical components (e.g., glucose, electrolytes, enzymes, lipids).
o Hematology: Analyzing blood samples for cell counts, morphology, and coagulation factors.
o Urinalysis: Performing physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine.
o Immunoassay/Serology: Detecting and quantifying antibodies and antigens to diagnose infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders.
o Blood Bank/Transfusion Services (in some core labs): Performing blood typing, crossmatching, and antibody screening.
o Molecular Diagnostics (basic procedures in some core labs): Performing basic molecular tests like PCR.
• Operates and maintains a variety of automated and manual laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring proper calibration and function.
• Performs quality control procedures on reagents, controls, and equipment; evaluates QC data, troubleshoots issues, and implements corrective actions.
• Prepares reagents, controls, and standards according to established protocols.
• Analyzes and interprets test results, recognizing abnormal or critical values and following established procedures for notification.
• Maintains accurate and detailed records of tests performed, results, quality control data, and instrument maintenance.
• Adheres to laboratory safety regulations, infection control policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Participates in internal and external quality assurance programs.
• Troubleshoots technical and analytical problems and escalates issues to supervisors when necessary.
• Assists with inventory management and ordering of reagents and supplies.
• May train new personnel and students on core laboratory procedures.
• Utilizes and maintains the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Medical Technology (MT), Clinical Laboratory Science.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by FDA is required.
• Training On ISO 15189:2012/22, LQMS, Biosafety & Bio Security, SLAMTA, SQC are mandatory
• Previous work experience of 5-8 years in a clinical laboratory setting, particularly in a core laboratory, is highly desirable.
• Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of clinical laboratory principles and techniques across multiple disciplines.
• Familiarity with a wide range of automated laboratory instrumentation.
• Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
• Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in using laboratory information systems (LIS) and other computer applications.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
• Manual dexterity for handling specimens and operating equipment.
• Visual acuity to perform tests and interpret results.
Work Environment:
• Clinical laboratory setting.
• Exposure to biological specimens and potentially infectious materials.
• May involve working with chemicals and reagents.
• Adherence to safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
