About the Job

The ISS seeks a senior researcher with specialised expertise on human security in the Horn of Africa region and Ethiopia in particular. The successful candidate will conduct research, develop policy recommendations, provide technical assistance and training, liaise with policy makers, and effectively communicate research results to a wide range of stakeholders. Proven experience in fundraising, tracking budgets as well as monitoring and evaluation are also needed.

The senior researcher will report to the Head of the Horn of Africa Security Analysis Programme.

Overview of duties 

  • Monitor and maintain a database on peace and security developments in Ethiopia and the Horn;
  • Conduct primary and secondary research and ensure findings are disseminated appropriately to target audiences;
  • Contribute to ISS’ assistance to governments in the Horn and to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) through technical support and training;
  • Manage research projects and provide support to junior team members;
  • Maintain close relations with partner organisations, regional institutions and international stakeholders;
  • Maintain productive relations with media;
  • Organize seminars, briefings and roundtables and present research findings internally and externally;
  • Identify new funding opportunities and draft grant proposals;

About You

Overview of requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in international studies, peace and conflict resolution, political science, security studies, law or related field;
  • At least 7 years’ experience in a policy, research, government, training or other relevant professional environment, preferably with a focus on the Horn of Africa;
  • Excellent understanding of conflict resolution, negotiations and political transitions in complex environments;
  • Proven networking and interpersonal skills, and the ability to partner with international and continental organisations, governments and civil society;
  • Experience in budget management and financial administration;
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation;
  • Track record of publications, media engagement and international public speaking;
  • Excellent English verbal and written skills; skills in French and/or Arabic will be an advantage;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Willingness to travel in the region and beyond;

The initial contract will be for one year and will  be renewed subject to ISS’ requirements, funding and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.
