Job Purpose

The purpose of the position is to ensure that quality hygiene promotion activities are implemented and integrated into Health and Nutrition at community and Health facility level. The post is also responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of sanitation and hygiene promotion activities.

The hygiene promotion assistant is responsible for ensuring high quality and timely delivery of all the WASH-related Hygiene Promotion activities, which contribute to the project objective. He/ She is responsible to support the implementation of rapid emergency response of hygiene and sanitation promotion by using appropriate hygiene promotion approaches, with required standard and principles, and level of participation. The position holder is also responsible for community mobilization, proper management of resources under the project and reporting periodically to woreda team leader and WASH Engineer.

Main duties & Responsibilities

Technical Support and Facilitation

  • Actively participate and conduct different WASH need assessments.
  • Conduct different hygiene & sanitation promotions and ensure the proper dissemination of Key hygiene message to the community at grass root level on different community meetings by using different hygiene promotion approaches
  • Organize community level hygiene awareness campaigns, Hosting Global events (Hand washing day).
  • Organize training for community representatives on Key WASH behaviors and prevention of feaco-oral disease transmission.
  • Distribute, monitor and ensure the proper distribution of IEC materials to be used at community level.
  • Work on building of the capacity of different Community groups and HEWs on WASH in emergency.
  • Prepare detail work plan for hygiene promotion/education activities and ensure proper implementation of the same.
  • Document and share lessons learned and success stories in relation to hygiene to inform future programming
  • Ensure that the hygiene promotion activities are implemented based on the WASH quality standards established by CWW
  • Daily monitoring and recording of field activities related to WASH-Hygiene promotion and track the project planned activity progress daily.
  • Produces activity progress reports and submit to the supervisor as per the reporting schedule.
  • Closely work with community Groups (CHVs, MtMSG, FtFSG, WASHCOs, clan leaders) and Kebele HEWs for hygiene and sanitation promotion activities
  • Conduct different review meetings with woreda partners, HEWs and community representatives on progress of the hygiene promotion activities and beneficiary compliance and feedback management systems.
  • Works closely with Woreda Health and Water Offices towards efficient and effective implementation of the response and emergency hygiene promotion activities
  • Works in collaboration with other Concern staff, government partners & key stakeholder.

Coordination and networking

  • To liaise with Government woreda Health office and kebele health posts and other relevant actors as requested by the line manager
  • Establish good working relationships with Concern staff, government bodies and other stakeholders
  • Coordinate with other Implementing Partners (IPs) in harmonizing hygiene promotion/education interventions
  • Attending field based WASH Cluster meetings

Planning, Reporting and Accountability

  • Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports
  • At all times, adhere to policies and guidelines of Concern.
  • Give technical support at kebele level staff on mainstreaming gender protection, accountability and DRR in the implementation of hygiene and sanitation promotion

  • Ensure that all hygiene/sanitation promotion activities are documented and recorded including desegregated data and reported to the respective woreda team leader

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties assigned by the line manager for the accomplishment of programme objectives.

About You

Person specification:

  • B.sc/Diploma in Environmental health and public Health.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience for Degree holders
  • 5 years relevant work experience for a Diploma.
  • 2 years’ experience in hygiene behavior change communication and in INGOs development programs in rural and remote environments in Ethiopia.
  • Prefer those who have experience in hygiene behavior change communication and in INGOs
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Local Language (Tigrigna) is mandatory
  • Experience in providing training and capacity building for staff

    Ability to understand and respect the cultural, religious and political environment and to work well with staff and local authorities in a diplomatic manner
