About the Job

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), one of the country’s leading humanitarian organizations, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to assume the role of Secretary General (Chief Executive Officer). This is a senior leadership position with overall responsibility for the direction and administration of the organization, ensuring the fulfilment of its mission to assist vulnerable populations and contribute to humanitarian efforts both locally and internationally.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic development and overall management of the organization, ensuring alignment with the ERCS mission, values, and strategic objectives.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including program development, resource mobilization, financial management and stakeholder relationships.
  • Ensure adherence to the policies, procedures, and standards set by ERCS and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
  • Strengthen ERCS’s reputation and relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, international partners, donors, and volunteers.
  • Represent the organization in key external forums, including national and international humanitarian bodies.
  • Guide the development and implementation of emergency response strategies, ensuring rapid and effective humanitarian aid delivery in times of need.
  • Provide effective leadership to the Executive Team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence.
  • Reports to the ERCS National Governing Board.

 

Terms of Employment are for:

  • Location: The position is based in Addis Ababa and requires regular domestic and international travel.

About You

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Leadership, Governance and Development Studies, Rural & Local Development Studies and related disciplines with 7 years of relevant experience, out of which 5 years in senior leadership position.
  • Second Degree in Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Leadership, Governance and Development Studies, Rural & Local Development Studies and related disciplines with 9 years of relevant experience, out of which 5 years in a senior leadership position.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans, manage complex programs, and drive organizational growth.
  • Deep understanding of humanitarian principles, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and Ethiopia’s political, cultural, and economic landscape.
  • Strong financial management skills and experience in resource mobilization and human development.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing diverse teams, cultivating partnerships, and building relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English and any additional international language is an asset.
