About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society 

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee  and 5871 Kebele Red Cross  committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

  • Terms of employment : Contract for one year with possible of extension.
  • Place of Work : Gamo Gofa ERCS-Branch , Arbaminch
  • Salary : As per organization salary scale

     

Background of the project

The USAID/Ethiopia Health Resilience Activity is a 5-year project (28th Mar 2023 – 27th Mar 2028) aims to strengthen local capacity to detect, prepare for, respond to, and mitigate the impact of public health emergencies and ensure the continuity of essential health services during emergencies. The Activity will result in improved local capacity and health system resilience in focus areas through strengthening woreda leadership and capacity to manage emergencies; improving early warning and alert response system (EWARS) and data management capacity; developing core capacity on gender in emergencies (GiE); and increasing innovative funding for emergencies, leading to reduced morbidity and mortality related to public health crises.

Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) are working together and in close collaboration with zonal and woreda offices, health facilities (HFs), communities, and other stakeholders to achieve these results. The USAID/Ethiopia Health Resilience Activity focused on selected woredas in three regions (Amhara; Oromia; and South Ethiopia) and one city administration (Dire Dawa).

 

Job Summary

  1. Under the supervision of the Admin and Finance Manager, the Accountant classifies and codifies accounting documents in accordance with the accounting system in place and the reporting requirements of the stakeholders; registers accounts transactions in accordance with the accounting software system and accounting procedure manual of the Society; reconciles books of accounts with bank statements; investigates correctness of accounting records and documents transmitted/ brought from branch offices and codifies with proper classification; compiles project fund spending data of  the National Secretariat financial reports of branches, and prepares financial statements and reports in accordance with project agreement document; cooperates with internal and external auditors for inspection and audit review of the project funds and  books of accounts.

     

KEY PERFORMANCE AREA 

  • Ensures completeness of documents and prepares appropriate classification of codes;
  • Reconciles core cost and project accounts with bank statements; Prepares trial balances, work sheets and other interim statements;
  • Registers/records      accounts transactions in accordance with the accounting software system and accounting procedure manual of the Society;
  • Checks and verifies payment requests against availability of budget and presents same to the senior accountant for further treatment; Reconciles accounts with bank statements;
  • Adjusts and reconciles accounts records;Extracts account balances from subsidiary and general ledger accounts and  assists in preparation of financial reports and statements;  Prepares monthly statements of bank reconciliation and adjusting entries;
  • Investigates correctness of accounting records and documents transmitted/brought from zonal branch offices and codifies with proper classification;
  • Follows up and facilitates the timely delivery of reports from zonal branches;Compiles project fund spending data of the projects in the branch and sends to HQ.
  • Makes the necessary reconciliations of project accounts with HQ, Verifies completeness and correctness of documents of project accounts and receives same;
  • Classifies and codifies accounting documents in accordance with the accounting system in place and the reporting requirements of the stakeholders;
  • Make sure that the financial documents are  properly and chronologically filled and properly kept; Make the supporting documents ready for audit ahead of time;
  • Cooperates with internal and external auditors for inspection and audit review of the project funds and  books of accounts;

 

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIS)

  • Monthly USAID/HRA project invoice review and feedback.
  • Smooth partnership and responsiveness.
  • Scan and maintain documentation to facilitate monthly invoice settlement.

About You

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Second/First degree in in Accounting/ Accounting & Finance/ & Accounting Software
  •  4/6 years related work experience.

     

Other Skills

  • Previous experience with USAID or other USG-funded projects is an advantage.
