Division Summary
IDG’s International Education Division supports education development around the world by strengthening education policy, management and practice in order to achieve measurable improvement in teaching and learning. From our well-established reputation in education system strengthening, to innovative work in early grade assessment and learning, RTI is improving education quality, relevance and efficiency through implementation of projects funded by USAID, The LEGO Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other donors and clients.
Project Summary
The Primary Education in Crisis Activity (PECA), funded by USAID/Ethiopia and the LEGO Foundation, aims to address the critical educational needs of children in Ethiopia. The purpose of this Activity is: improved learning outcomes, wellbeing, and systems resilience for the most vulnerable primary school age children affected by crisis in Ethiopia.
Achievement of the purpose is dependent on success in the areas of the following three Intermediate Results (IRs):
- IR 1: Improved federal and regional capacity to prepare for, coordinate and oversee play based targeted instruction during acute crisis through to recovery I
- IR 2: Educators, school and classroom environments, formal and informal, have improved capabilities to support children’s holistic foundational skills and wellbeing
- IR 3: Communities and caregivers have improved capabilities promote children’s holistic foundational skills, wellbeing, and resilience
Position Summary
The Accountant will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the monthly close, general ledger maintenance, and financial statement preparation. This role requires expertise in accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure the production of accurate and timely financial statements. The Senior Accountant will manage tight deadlines and handle a range of accounting tasks, including routine and non-routine journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and providing support for year-end audits. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with senior-level staff and corporate accounting teams.
This is a hands-on position that demands a deep understanding of accounting operations and reporting requirements. The Accountant will report to the Finance Manager and will be located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting structure and general ledger.
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end closing process.
- Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information on a monthly basis.
- Collaborate with the other finance departments to support overall departmental goals and objectives.
- Monitor and analyze department workflows to develop more efficient procedures and resource utilization while maintaining high accuracy.
- Provide guidance to staff on handling non-routine reporting transactions.
- Support the development and implementation of new procedures and enhancements to improve workflow efficiency.
- Assist in designing and creating new reports and analytical tools to meet evolving project needs.
- Respond to inquiries from finance and other management staff regarding financial results, special reporting requests, and other related queries.
- Work with the Finance Manager to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
- Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are consistently met.
- Set up capital work orders and monitor accounting transactions for projects.
- Assist in supporting the department with special projects and workflow process improvements.
- Perform additional tasks as needed.
About You
Qualifications
- CPA certification is required.
- At least six years of directly related accounting and finance experience.
- Proven experience with General Ledger and monthly closing processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated initiative.
- High intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to multitask and strong troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in English is required.
- Ability and willingness to work throughout Ethiopia.
- A test may be required as part of the interview process.
