Organizational Profile: MERSA Media Institute (MMI) is a non-profit media policy think tank. We work to help create vibrant, responsible, and independent media institutions, professional unions, and education centers through research, capacity building, and institutional support in Ethiopia.
Position Summary: MERSA Media Institute in partnership with Deutsche Welle Akademie is organizing a second round of new-entrants training under the project Media and Journalism Education. The training will be a three-month journalism crash course where trainees from different educational backgrounds will get to experience hands-on journalism education delivered by industry experts. The main role of the assistant trainer will be supporting trainers during in-class sessions and mentorship, helping trainers edit trainees’ stories, accompanying trainees in all field reporting sessions, and preparing and overseeing studio and editing schedules for trainees.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support project planning and implementation of all targets set in the action plan matrix, in collaboration with the Project Manager.
- Facilitate journalism education training by preparing and organizing training materials, attending all training sessions and supporting the mentorship of trainees together with training consultants.
- Ensuring trainee’s assignment delivery and helping trainers edit trainees’ stories
- Accompanying trainees in all field reporting sessions
- Preparing and overseeing studio and editing schedules for trainees
- Support the project in the procurement process including preparation of TORs, receipts of quotations, and evaluation of bids
- Digital publishing and management, graphics design, audio-visual content production for web and social media
- Assist in event planning, management, and other project-related activities
- Scheduling meetings, setting agendas, and writing meeting minutes for the project team
- Organizing, facilitating, and participating in stakeholder meetings
- Communication: Write, edit, and distribute content, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other materials as needed that communicate the organization’s activities
- Documentation: Maintain database: Resources, contacts, project files
- Perform any other related task as may be assigned

About You
Qualifications/experience required
The required qualifications for this position include
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, media and communication or other related fields.
- A minimum of one year work experience in a media house
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent use and understanding of Microsoft and Google products
- Excellent written, editing, and oral communication skills in English and Amharic language
- Ability to work under pressure
