Young Men’s Christian Association of Ethiopia (YMCA Ethiopia) is a non-religious, non-political, and pioneering youth-serving organization that works for the well-being of youth, children, and the community as a whole. YMCA Ethiopia was established in 1951 with the vision of empowering young people for the renaissance of Africa. It is affiliated with the World Alliance of YMCAs and the African Alliance of YMCAs, and it shares the founding principle of “Body – Mind – Spirit,” which is symbolized by the time-honored triangle that denotes a holistic youth development approach. YMCA Ethiopia works in collaboration with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in Addis Ababa and five (5) regions of the country (Amhara, Oromia, SNNPR, Tigray, and Sidama), and it has overall ten (10) branch offices across the country.

 

 

Job Summary:

The Communication and Partnership Specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies to promote the YMCA Ethiopia’s programs and initiatives, both domestically and within the broader African YMCA network. Additionally, they will serve as a liaison between the YMCA Ethiopia and the African Union, representing the interests of the African Alliance YMCAs and facilitating collaboration and partnership opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Communication Strategy and Implementation:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive communication plan to raise awareness of the YMCA Ethiopia’s activities, services, and impact among key stakeholders, including members, donors, partners, and the general public.
  • Manage the organization’s social media channels, website, and other digital platforms to effectively communicate the YMCA’s message and engage with the target audience.
  • Create and distribute high-quality content, such as press releases, newsletters, and multimedia materials, to showcase the YMCA’s achievements and initiatives.
  • Strengthen the YMCA Ethiopia’s brand identity and ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels.
  • Serve as the main contact for media inquiries, foster relationships with journalists and media outlets, and organize press conferences, media briefings, and interviews.
  • Organize and coordinate events such as workshops, conferences, and community outreach activities.

Partnership Development and Liaison Role:

  • Represent the YMCA Ethiopia at the African Union, serving as a liaison between the organization and the continental body.
  • Learn and understand the AU strategy as it relates to youth engagement and development
  • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with other YMCA chapters, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, and private sector entities within the African Union’s member states.
  • Facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and collaborative initiatives among the African Alliance YMCAs, leveraging the African Union’s platform and resources.
  • Advocate for the interests and concerns of the African Alliance YMCAs at the African Union, ensuring their voice is heard in relevant policy discussions and decision-making processes.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Develop and implement mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of the YMCA Ethiopia’s communication efforts and partnership initiatives.
  • Analyze data and feedback to continuously improve the organization’s outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Prepare regular reports on the YMCA Ethiopia’s communication activities and partnership-related initiatives.

Reporting to: Executive Director

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary: 20,000.00 – 30,000.00 ETB (Based on your experience)

Duty Station: National Office

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in communication, stakeholder engagement, or partnership management, preferably in the non-profit or development sector.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing effective communication strategies, using both traditional and digital channels.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Skills of IT tools related to communication (Photoshop, Canvas, etc.)
  • Familiar with the African Union’s structure, policies, and decision-making processes preferred.
  • Proficiency in English. Knowledge of any other official African Union language (French, Arabic, Portuguese, or Spanish) is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Proven project management and team collaboration skills.
