Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) seeks a dynamic, innovative candidate for the position of a Deputy Director to assume the following duties and responsibilities.
Job Summary 

The Deputy Director (DD) plays key leadership roles in ensuring an effective and efficient management role of the organization supporting the Executive Directress in achieving the mission and strategic objectives of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The DD is responsible for overseeing daily operations, project /program implementation, staff development, partnership, resource mobilizations, communication, visibility and external relations with full authority in the absence of the Executive Directress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategic Planning:
  • Lead the development and implementation of strategies that align with the vision and mission of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
  • Oversee the development of proposals and execution of long-term and short-term goals across all programs and departments.
  • Support the Executive Director in shaping organizational direction, policy formulation, and risk management.
  • Represent ESD on strategic meetings at different levels.
  • Prepare agendas for Management team meetings
  • Policy Development and Review
  • Coordinate organizational policy development as deemed necessary
  • Coordinate and review of existing organizational policies
  • Align organizational policies to the context of operational regions

 

Program Management

  • Work closely with the programmed director to see that all projects/programmers are delivered on time, within scope, and budget.
  • Ensure that projects/programs are aligned with donor expectations, national policies, and organizational objectives.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and ensure the quality and impact of all projects /programs.
  • Coordinate the timely preparation of programmatic reports for donors, board members, and other stakeholders
  • Coordinate the timely preparation of project /programs proposals in alignment with the organizational mission and strategic objectives

Operational Management

  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, ensuring optimal functioning of all departments including Finance, HR, Operations, and Communications.
  • Manage resource allocation to meet both current and future organizational needs.
  • Lead the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and donor requirements

Financial Management

  • Work closely with the Finance and Administration Head to oversee budget planning, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Ensure financial sustainability by managing resources efficiently and pursuing new funding opportunities.
  • Ensure donor compliance, grant management, and financial reporting are done according to organizational and donor standards.

Human Resources and Staff Development 

  • Work closely with the Finance and Administration Head to oversee HR development.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and capacity-building to senior management and staff.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and performance management to ensure that the team meets the organizational goals.
  • Foster an organizational culture of teamwork, innovation, and accountability
  • Ensure the welfare and professional development of staff through appropriate HR strategies

Communication and Visibility

  • Work closely with the communication and visibility specialist
  • Develop and oversee communication and visibility strategy and ensure its alignment with ESD´s vision, mission and goal
  • Lead the design and implementation of a comprehensive communication strategy to increase the visibility of the development and humanitarian Projects/program and impact
  • Oversee the development of tailored communication plans for various audience including media, donors, partners and the general public
  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets to increase the ESDs media coverage
  • Oversee ESDs digital communication, including social media platforms, website content and online campaigns
  • Ensure regular updates of ESDs website, blog posts and social media to engage the online community and stakeholder
  • Ensure that ESD as an organization maintains a consistent brand image across all internal and external communication, publications, promotion materials

Fundraising and Resource Mobilization 

  • Develop Fundraising strategy
  • Lead the creation and implementation of a diversified fundraising strategy to secure resources from various resources including grants ,donors , UN agencies ,Foundations ,corporate partnership
  • Oversee the development of high-quality funding proposals and grant application ensuring donor requirements and submission deadlines

Establishment of the Business   Wing 

  • Work closely with the business development specialist
  • Lead the establishment of the business wing for enhancing the financial sustainability of ESD in compliance with government regulations
  • Oversee the setup of production workshops and functionality
  • Oversee the production, display and sale of produced materials
  • Plan and coordinate fundraising events such as galas and other activities to raise funds

Networking and Partnership

  • Identify and engage with likeminded organizations, consortium for potential funding collaborations
  • Identify and engage with thematic focused working groups or clusters that align with ESDs thematic focus
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, government agencies, international and local partners, and the community.
  • Represent ESD at national and international forums, conferences, and media events as required.
  • Actively engage in networking to enhance the visibility and reputation of the organization

Risk Management and Compliance 

  • Identify and mitigate organizational risks.
  • Ensure the organization adheres to the national and international regulatory frameworks
  • Monitor security, operational, and legal risks, ensuring that appropriate action is taken to mitigate those risks

Reporting to Executive Directress

Duty Station: Addis Ababa with frequent travel to project sites.

About You

Required Qualification and Experiences 

  • Master’s degree in development studies, Educational Planning, Public Administration, International Relations, or other related social science fields.
  • At least 10 years of experience in senior management roles, in the NGO or international development areas.
  • Proven track record of managing multi-donor funded projects, especially in a complex, conflict or post-conflict environment.
  • Strong understanding of Ethiopia’s political, social, and economic environment.
  • Excellent financial management skills, including budgeting and reporting.
  • Demonstrated organizational leadership and communication skills.
  • Fluent in English and Amharic; knowledge of other local languages is an asset.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
