Habesha Steel Mills PLC is looking for a dedicated and technically skilled Furnace Fireman to join our Rolling Mill (RM) Operations Team. Unlike a general safety post, this role is an integral part of the production crew responsible for the direct operation, firing, and temperature management of the Reheating Furnace.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the thermal efficiency of the furnace to ensure steel billets reach the required rolling temperatures safely and consistently.
Key Responsibilities
- Burner Operation: Safely ignite and manage furnace burners, adjusting fuel-to-air ratios to maintain optimal heating zones for steel billets.
- Temperature Control: Monitor furnace pyrometers and gauges to ensure temperatures remain within the specified range for the Rolling Mill’s production requirements.
- Fuel Management: Manage the supply of fuel (oil or gas), ensuring burners are clean, free of carbon buildup, and operating at correct pressures.
- Furnace Maintenance: Assist the production team in monitoring the refractory lining and water-cooling systems to prevent overheating or equipment damage.
- Emergency Shut-offs: Execute immediate emergency shutdown procedures for fuel lines in the event of a flame-out or technical malfunction within the furnace.
- Shift Coordination: Work closely with the Furnace Foreman and Rolling Mill operators to synchronize billet discharge with the mill’s speed.
Job Requirements
- Education: Diploma or Grade 12 completion; a technical certificate in Boiler Operations, Heat Treatment, or a related mechanical field is an advantage.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience specifically in furnace firing or boiler operations within a manufacturing plant (steel or heavy industry preferred).
- Technical Skills:
- Hands-on knowledge of industrial burners and fuel delivery systems.
- Ability to read and interpret temperature gauges and pressure meters.
- Physical Stamina: Must be capable of working in high-heat environments and standing for extended periods during production shifts.
- Aptitude: Strong attention to detail and a high level of responsibility regarding high-temperature equipment.
