About the Job

Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) is an international Italian NGO established in 1965. Since its establishment, COOPI has been undertaking activities to help and empower the poor and needy in different countries. COOPI Ethiopia started its operation in 1995 and has been primarily implementing emergency, relief and early recovery programs in water hygiene and sanitation, food security and livelihood, nutrition and protection sectors.

COOPI is currently implementing 10 projects in Ethiopia focusing on WASH, ESNFI, CCCM, Energy, Food security and Livelihood managing 7 field bases and a staff of over 100 employees.

COOPI is looking for qualified, skilled and motivated staff to carry out an internship in the WASH sector based in Addis Ababa in the WASH technical office. This position will be important to support the WASH department of COOPI and will promote growth for young professional in the humanitarian field.

Position: Internship in the WASH sector as WASH Technical Officer

  • Number required: 1 (One)
  • Area Coordination Office: Addis Ababa.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning

  • Update and create manuals and guidelines for water sector interventions with an engineering focus.
  • Prepare a monthly plan with the support of the WASH Coordinator/Advisor.
  • Support the WASH Coordinator/Advisor in planning technical activities.
  • Assist in drafting new project proposals, particularly in selecting technical solutions.
  • Participate and contribute to weekly project meetings.

 

Implementation

  • Conduct research and studies to update technical WASH manuals;
  • Read and interpret technical drawings/BoQs/topographic surveys provided by the coordination office;
  • Collaborate with the project team to integrate new technical solutions;
  • Update Best Practices and relevant international and local standards for the water sector;
  • Prepare BoQs and technical drawings for the WASH sector (towers with elevated concrete tanks, water points, latrines…).

     

Reporting

  • Actively participating to weekly meeting called by the WASH Coordinator/Advisor;
  • Preparation of weekly and monthly reports to share with the WASH Coordinator/Advisor;
  • Assist in drafting reports on the progress of technical activities.

 

 

Project development

  • Support in updating the technical solutions (mainly technical drawings and BoQs) based on field constraints to facilitate the implementation of the projects.

     

External Coordination

  • Attend external meetings related to the WASH sector when requested by the supervisor.

 

 

Perform any other duties assigned by the WASH Coordinator/Advisor.

 

About You

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor in Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Computer literacy, with excellent knowledge of the Office package and the candidate should have enough knowledge in the use of a software programs such as GIS, Copernicus Sentinel, AutoCAD, SketchUp (or any design software);
  • Proven capacity to work in a team is essential.

Preferred

  • Good knowledge of the construction of WASH facilities (towers, concrete/mortar tanks, control boxes, water points, latrines, etc.) and the drafting of related BoQs;
  • Have some knowledge about WASH activities like wells development, hydraulics simulation, masonry works, how to prepare different concrete mixes, how to conduct a topographic survey, discharge measurements, construction of latrines, construction of control boxes, construction of water tanks…;
  • Knowledge of SPHERE Standards;
  • Good knowledge of fittings and pipes and how to install them correctly;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in stressful environments and under pressure.

Duration of the internship: Six months, with the possibility of transitioning to full-time staff based on satisfactory performance and the needs of the organization.

Benefit: 

  • Reimbursement  6,000 ETB
  • Medical Insurance 10,000 ETB for Staff and 3,000 ETB for dependent (Spouse and Children)
  • Leave days 8 for 6 months contract.
