About the Job

Good Neighbors (GNE) is a global NGO founded in Korea in 1991, currently operating in 40 countries and supported by seven nations. Since 1997, the Ethiopian branch has been committed to improving lives through initiatives in child protection, education, health, and more. GNE operates in various regions of Ethiopia, including Addis Ababa, Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, Benishangul Gumuz, Somali, Sidama, South Ethiopia, and Central Ethiopia. Good Neighbors Ethiopia is now launching a new project in the Tigray Region, funded by Good Neighbors Japan (Japan Platform), aimed at supporting conflict-affected populations through livelihood opportunities. GNE is seeking a qualified individual to join their team.

Overview of the Position

  • The Livelihood Specialist will lead initiatives to enhance the livelihoods of communities through the development and support of cooperative programs. This role involves working closely with local cooperatives, farmers, and community organizations to promote sustainable practices, strengthen capacity, and improve economic opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Development:
    • Implement livestock-focused livelihood programs that align with community needs and organizational goals.
    • Conduct assessments to identify opportunities for improving livestock-based livelihoods.
    • To strengthen capacities of SACCO cooperatives and groups in improving livelihood and household income through the adoption of improved, climate resilient animal husbandry and farming practices.
  • To enhance and support SACCO cooperatives in improving their human, financial, and organizational management, thereby providing better services to their members.
    • Provide technical support to standardize the operations of SACCOs and monitor their financial status in relation to the capital injected by this project.
    • Facilitate assessment to identify problems and provide technical advises to tackle the problems.

     

  • Training and Capacity Building:
    • Assist on identify institutions, resources, individuals, agencies and consulting firms to offer training programs and products, training management committee, saving and cooperative knowledge and services consistent with planned cost;
    • Facilitate and offer trainings to SACCOs management committee to enhance their initiation and knowledge for quality support for SACCO member.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Establish indicators for assessing the impact of livestock programs.
    • Collect and analyze data to measure program effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
  • Collaboration and Networking:
    • Build partnerships with local governments, NGOs, and community organizations to enhance program reach and sustainability.
    • Represent the organization in relevant meetings and forums to advocate for livestock-based livelihood initiatives.
  • Resource Management:
    • Oversee the procurement and distribution of livestock and related resources.
    • Ensure that resources are used efficiently and transparently.
  • Reporting:
    • Prepare reports on program activities, outcomes, and recommendations for stakeholders.
    • Periodically collect institutional, financial, and operational data and summarize them for dissemination to various stakeholders.
    • Provide regular updates to management on program progress and challenges.
  • Accountability

    Adhere to the GNE Code of Conduct and the zero-tolerance policy for Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA). Ensure accountability to affected populations, uphold humanitarian principles, and contribute to the integration of Protection and Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) mainstreaming into GNE programming.

    Perform other duties related to the position as assigned by the line supervisor.

About You

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Cooperative Management, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in cooperative development or livelihood program management.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of cooperative principles and practices.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with community development principles and livelihood strategies
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with conflict-affected communities or in humanitarian settings.
  • Proficiency in English and Tigrigna
