Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a pioneering organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula and related maternal health issues. Founded on compassion and excellence, HFE strives to restore health and dignity to women across Ethiopia through treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation programs.

One of our key initiatives, Project Zero, aims to achieve fistula eradication woreda by woreda, ensuring that no woman suffers needlessly from this preventable condition.

We already launched this program in some parts of the country. We also want to ensure this project in Central Ethiopia, Western Gurage Zone, Gedebano Gutazer Wolene Woreda.

For the successful implementation of the program, HFE needs to employ an experienced candidate as per the given job title and responsibilities.

Mandatory:

  • Local Wolane language speaking is mandatory
  • Fluency in English, Amharic, and other local languages including Siltʼe language is advantageous.

Job Summery

The Mentor will work to realize that the Hamlin model of Care and the latest global standards of health care will be practiced in the region. A Midwife Mentor must have depth and breadth of technical expertise and experience in the delivery of maternal, neonatal, child, and reproductive health services. In addition, this position requires quality improvement approaches as well as current trends in service delivery, training, and capacity building approaches that are based on scientific evidence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities of Midwife Mentor include the following, but are not limited to:

  1. Ensure that the program is technically sound, evidence-based, and responsive to the needs of the countries.
  2. Work in collaboration with the Regional Health Centers, focusing on the project site health centers where Hamlin Midwives are deployed to support aspects of the strategic direction and leadership of the maternal and child health programming guiding linkages and integration within the overall health sector.
  3. Communicate with the team leader, project coordinator, and project and prevention manager to provide regular updates on progress of achievements against set targets, program challenges and successes, as well as ways forward for ongoing implementation.
  4. Provide needed technical support for woreda health offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, identification and referral of historic fistula patients and facilitate their treatment.
  5. Actively participate in the Fistula Patient Identification Process, in collaboration with patient identification officer and other stakeholders in awareness creation, strengthen the existing referral system, and facilitate their treatment.
  6. Submit report of mentorship to the Team leader and to other concerned bodies when necessary.
  7. Promoting community involvement of midwives’ activities.
  8. Is Responsible for the implementation and coordination of the Mentorship, facility, and community-based assessment and other project activities.
  9. Collaborate with the health extension workers and other involved groups in network creation during recruitment of pregnant women to the cohort.
  10. Participate in baseline assessments, midterm and end-of-term evaluations of the project.
  11. Travel between health facilities and woreda health office as needed
  12. Ensures the best documentation for the project activities.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, team leader, PZ coordinator and PZ and prevention manager.

Key competencies and professional expertise required:

  • Excellent skills in computer software packages; previous experience with District Health Information System (DHIS) database packages preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural communication skills, able to work well both within a team and independently under stressful conditions.
  • Proven clinical experience, working in the delivery of maternal and child health services.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing service delivery protocols, norms, and standards.

  • BSc in Midwifery or MSc in Maternal & Child Health-related fields

Work Experience

  • 4+ years in maternal and newborn health management or coordination
