Three Roots is seeking a National Director to lead our organization’s project activities in Ethiopia. The National Director will work with our implementing partner in Ethiopia to ensure programmatic success, and will report to the Executive Director in the United States. The National Director is responsible for successful leadership of the Ethiopia operations for Three Roots International, in alignment with the three-year strategy, to achieve data-driven, evidence-based impact of transformational development in TRI projects. The effective candidate is energized and experienced in comprehensive budget management, leadership and growth of programs, management of a healthy and high-performing staff team, and maintaining strong and productive relationships with the local, regional, and national government of Ethiopia. In the coming years, the National Director will lead the growth and expansion of the organization.

This position is full-time, a minimum of 40 hours per week, and is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Management
- Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance & administration, communications, & systems; recommend timelines & resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
- Actively engage and energize TRI staff in Ethiopia maintaining high level of team coherence, collaboration and support.
- Lead, coach, develop, and retain TRI’s high-performance senior management team and staff.
- Evaluate organizational effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, government regulations and TRI policies.
- Enter into and sign off local contracts with third parties as per the delegation of authority issued by the Executive Director.
Program Design and Management
- Initiate and design impactful projects in line with TRI’s vision, mission and strategies.
- Develop and implement robust tracking systems to monitor scaling progress, ensuring effective project design approach and processes. Regularly evaluate program components to measure success and provide clear, data-driven reports to TRI HQ, funders, stakeholders, and other key constituents.
- Lead, manage, and successfully maintain the designed programs of TRI.
- Review and revise the annual Program Implementation Plan in collaboration with Ethiopia team.
- Collaborate in the planning and completion of events initiated by the field office.
- Ensure that programs align with the organization’s strategic priorities.
- Contribute to, review and approve, program budgets and expenditures.
- Oversee program monitoring and evaluation in collaboration with the Project Manager.
- Ensure pertinent government agreements, documents and reports are produced and maintained appropriately.
- Manage field office reports, statistics, and client information in order to provide frequent information to the U.S. office as needed and requested.
Partner Relationships and Networking
- Establish/maintain a network of relationships with government and non-government partners, and promote strong partnerships with appropriate partners.
- Participate in strategic working groups with other organizations, as appropriate.
- Effectively communicate and represent TRI’s programs to key donors and other interested parties.
- Actively participate in local forums and events which align with TRI’s vision, mission and strategic intent.
- Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. representing TRI as delegated by the Executive Director.
- Liaises with concerned government and non-government bodies to facilitate collaboration and smooth working relationship in consultation with the Executive Director.
Financial Management and Stewardship
- Oversee competent and effective use of all program resources (human resources, financial resources, and assets) for their intended purpose.
- Review and ensure accuracy of annual budget for Ethiopia Office.
- Ensure appropriate spending of allocated funds in compliance with the approved TRI budget, as well as the budget submitted to the government, proactively managing expenditures and securing necessary approvals for any variances.
- Ensure management of finances according to the TRI’s Financial Management Principles and enforce internal controls.
- Ensure preparation and submission of regular, timely and accurate financial reporting to the U.S. office.
Human Resources Management
- In collaboration with the TRI U.S office, oversee hiring of qualified staff to ensure efficiency and productivity in meeting program objectives in Ethiopia.
- Facilitate and/or provide staff capacity development activities to enhance skills, and to motivate staff to maintain excellence in the performance of their duties.
- Encourage accountability and accurate staff record keeping for Ethiopia team.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, coaching and corrective action for staff under his/her supervision.
Spiritual Leadership
- Inspire staff as a servant leader who models sound spiritual leadership, both in word and deed.
- Lead and facilitate regular times of spiritual refreshment for the staff.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced degree, ideally an MBA, with at least 7-10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
- Experience serving as part of an international organization with headquarters outside the program country, preferred in the US.
- Demonstrated experience in program design and M&E; unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Strong ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures, with an understanding of donor expectations and relationship-building; fundraising, grant development, and public relations experience helpful.
- Demonstrated experience in leading a team through a strategic and annual planning process with success
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to organizational planning.
- Strong technological experience and competency; experience with Google and Microsoft platforms, as well as online project management systems.
- Complex problem solving and analytical skills; Ability to work within complex operating environment.
- Superior ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks, and to prioritize effectively
- Fluency in English and Amharic languages; Afan Oromo preferred
