   About Center for Justice (CJ)

Center for Justice (CJ) is Ethiopia’s main independent non-governmental organization working for systemic and service changes of the Ethiopian Criminal Justice System. Its establishment was spearheaded by individuals who sought to improve things they came across during their incarceration.

CJ is an organization which blends practical interventions and advocacy campaigns to improve the criminal justice system in general and the condition of detainees in Ethiopia in particular. It stands for human rights and works for their protection and realization through a mix of practical interventions and advocacy works that improve conditions for accused, arrested and detained persons both at the systemic and service levels at the national and detention facilities levels. Our fundamental task as an organization is to effect progressive change in the Ethiopian Criminal Justice System.

We work for people who are serving prison terms in the Ethiopian prisons and people who go through the Ethiopian Criminal Justice System. We give a special attention for disadvantaged people like women prisoners, children living with their incarcerated mothers, persons with disabilities and juvenile offenders.

We promote reform in the following areas: oversight of criminal justice systems to increase accountability, prevent torture and ill-treatment, a progressive criminal justice system that upholds human rights, promotes effective non-custodial responses to crime, and uses prison as a last resort,  improve health for the most vulnerable in detention facilities;  supervision, rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration of prisoners;  treatment of young offenders in correctional institutions and youth corrective training centers;  advocate for and support the provision of facilities for children accompanying  their mothers in prison, the inclusion of people with lived experience in criminal justice reform efforts,   promote peaceful and inclusive societies and the enhancement of   rule of law & democratic governance, improve detainees’ access to legal aid and raise the quality of legal aid, improve the working condition of prison staffs and women legal, social and economic empowerment

Key Responsibilities include

  • Develop a project schedule and proposal, with milestones and a due date, and estimate the materials that are required.
  • Ensure overall operational management of the projects and delivery of results in accordance with the project documents, work plans, and other joint agreements between EWRA and project partners, in consultation with the project manager or immediate supervisor.

  • Ensure timely preparation, update, and implementation of annual and detailed implementation work plans and other related documents for the timely commencement and implementation of the project activities.
  • providing substantive input to the project activities and ultimate in-project quality assurance for achieving the overall project objectives;
  • Ensure timely implementation of project activities, including reporting on progress vis-à-vis planned activities and expected outputs.

  • Immediate supervisor  of project facilitators and project officers
  • Maintaining and monitoring project plans and prepare activity schedules and work plan.
  • Ensure establishment of project Monitoring and supportive supervision system, and design reporting templates, and provide progress report (narrative) to CJ.
  • Identifying, escalating, tracking and resolving project issues on an ongoing basis, and proactively reporting to the Project Manager issues which require wider attention and resolution.
  • Developing appropriate narrative reporting  for the Programs Manager’s review in order to meet CJ and donor’s requirements
  • Facilitating accurate project budgeting and forecasting processes, ensuring that activities costs are kept within budgets
  • Developing Terms of Reference , concept notes and project proposals
  • Write narrative reports
  • Ensuring timely monthly project reporting on projects progress achieved, project  plans, changes in direction and challenges encountered
    ensuring compliance with the respective donor’s project management policies and procedures;
  • Make sure the implementation of the project attains its objectives and aligns with CJ’s strategic plan.
  • Perform additional assignments. provide immediate supervisory responsibilities as needed to ensure the effectiveness of CJ’s project activities.

About You

Education:  

  • LLB/LLM in Law or other related Social Science fields with at least 3 years of experience in project management for NGOs.
