Job summary

Shift leader in a glass bottle manufacturing directs the daily floor operations of a 24/7 facility and oversees raw material processing, furnace melting, forming machines, and packaging lines. Shift leader responsibilities include maximizing production efficiency, minimizing bottle defects, ensuring compliance with factory standards, and strictly enforcing safety protocols across all shift teams.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations Management

• Meet shift output targets while strictly adhering to pack-to-melt ratios and reducing operational losses.
• Coordinate the continuous operations of the batch plant, furnace, forming, inspection and packaging lines.
• Manage high-pressure production processes, including post power outage startups and routine job/mold changeovers.
• Monitor energy, fuel, raw and packaging material utilization to ensure optimal cost-effectiveness.

Quality Control & Defect Management

• Conduct random on-line inspections and audits on machines to detect glass defects and proper implementations of SOPs at the floor.
• Raise for management decision quickly for products that fall outside of quality standards and enforce corrective actions to minimize rework.

Team Leadership

• Lead, motivate, mentor and evaluate shift personnel, fostering a collaborative and continuous-improvement mindset.
• Supervise, coach, and evaluate shift personnel, including supervisors, operators, mechanicians, and technicians.
• Conduct pre-shift handover meetings to discuss previous shift issues.
• Identify skills gaps and provide on-the-job training to improve workforce capability.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

• Promote a safety-first culture on the production floor, particularly in high-temperature “hot-end” and “cold-end” environments.
• Enforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP, and plant safety rules
• Conduct safety briefings, ensure the proper use of PPE, and enforce strict compliance with environmental and waste-reduction regulations.

Reporting & Administration

• Complete shift paperwork, log production downtime and causes, and prepare detailed shift performance reports to brief incoming managers and maintenance teams.
• Manage shift rosters and coordinate with HR regarding staffing and leave.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

• Coordinate with hot-end and cold-end technicians to execute rapid breakdowns and preventive maintenance.
• Escalate mechanical, electrical, or automation issues to the engineering or maintenance departments to prevent major production downtime.

Required Knowledge and skill (Competence)

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial) or Operations Management.
• Experience: over 3+ to 5 years of production or supervisory experience, preferably within continuous-process glass or heavy packaging manufacturing.
• Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding about glass production process, IS (Individual Section) machines, glass bottle defects and automated inspection equipment.
• Soft Skills: Excellent team leadership and problem-solving abilities, mechanical aptitude, data-driven decision-making, and strong communication skills.
• Training and certification: Having taking training on ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISO 45000 and on lean six sigma manufacturing will be advantageous.
