Caritas Switzerland (CACH) has been working in Ethiopia for 50 years. Currently, CACH cooperates with four partners in Ethiopia. CACH has successfully registered as an International Non-Governmental Organization in Ethiopia, enabling it to operate at the project implementation level. With a major focus on climate, income, migration, and humanitarian aid, CACH is seeking to hire a dedicated and experienced WASH Engineer to join our team for an emergency WASH response in the Dire and Dillo woredas of Borena zone.

 

Summary of Duties

The WASH Engineer Expert will lead all the site construction activities in the provision of potable water to the communities. The Engineer will also closely work with CACH field teams, stakeholders, and community members through WASH soft activities to build their skills. By establishing effective monitoring and evaluation frameworks, the WASH Engineer will ensure the impact and sustainability of programs, ultimately contributing to the long-term well-being and self-sufficiency of vulnerable populations.

 

Main Areas of Responsibility

 

Main Tasks

  • Conduct field assessments and surveys to identify areas needing new water sources or repairs.
  • Coordinate and arrange meetings with host and refugee community leaders/ representatives in collaboration with other CACH staff.
  • Provide program support and technical advice related to WASH initiatives.
  • Maintain oversight of the country’s WASH program(s) and strategically develop new projects in current and surrounding areas.
  • Take part in technical design and construction supervision of solar powered water supply system, rainwater harvesting, borehole catchments area development, etc.
  • Offer technical advice to communities, WUA/ WASHCos and hygiene promotes as needed.
  • Oversee water quality monitoring and surveillance, ensuring community participation throughout the process.
  • Request and manage materials from the store, ensuring their proper usage.
  • Ensure adequate community involvement, particularly the active participation of women and children in project implementation.
  • Prepare communities and sites in advance for project work.
  • Ensure equitable access to project benefits for all communities based on their needs.
  • Coordinate with field teams for all WASH logistical requirements, ensuring proper planning and execution.
  • Maintain oversight of WASH supplies ordered for projects, supporting logistics staff in coordination and quality control.
  • Prepare and submit internal activity reports and monthly plans.
  • Actively participate in WASH coordination meetings at the woreda/zonal level.
  • Undertake other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

 

Sustain internal and external coordination

  • Represent Caritas at all relevant technical external task forces, working groups, seminars or other meetings/forums which have been identified and approved and use these meetings to negotiate strategic, and advocacy positions.
  • Explain the project’s activities and objectives to partners and the community.
  • Participate in internal and external coordination meetings.
  • Integrate and coordinate the work of the community and local partners;
  • Provide the team with technical support.

 

Other and Special tasks

  • Staying up to date with internal and donor as well as government standards and tools.
  • Work collaboratively with all departments and units.

 

Duty stations: Mega with frequent travel to the project sites

About You

Educational background and work experience Needed:

  • Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in water resource engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in WASH engineering related roles.
  • Previous experience with NGOs is preferred.
  • Language Requirements:Fluency in English, Amharic, and Afan Oromo is required
