TOR for Editing and layout services of Strategic Human Rights Litigation Guideline
Background
Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR)’ is an Ethiopian civil society organization re-registered on September 19, 2019 before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency in accordance with Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The objectives of the Organization to promote and advocate human rights among others through increasing the participation and contribution of lawyers in the area of human rights through trainings and other capacity building activities, supporting lawyers across the nation and help exchange of ideas, information and experience for better protection of human rights and prevalence of human rights; litigating before courts other relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights recognized under the FDRE Constitution and other laws; awareness creation for justice organs on international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia; providing free or low cost legal services for victims of human rights violation particularly disadvantaged communities; influencing the government to enact new laws or amend existing ones to give full protection for human rights; and familiarizing the idea of human rights defenders (HRD) among the lawyers.
With a view of achieving these objectives, LHR has been building the capacities of lawyers, judges and CSOs on Strategic Human Rights Litigation (SHRL). Currently, LHR is implementing a project which involves making SHRL guideline of LHR user friendly and up to date of new developments in the conceptual and practical aspects of SHRL at national and international level. With a view of disseminating the guideline to different stakeholders, LHR intends to compile and publish the guideline in good quality standard. Accordingly, LHR is looking for a qualified consultant who will perform editing and layout works for the guideline.
Objective
The overall objective of the assignment is to edit, creatively design, do the layout work and provide the InDesign and camera-ready versions (both web and print versions) of a SHRL Guideline of LHR in a good quality standard.
The scope of the work
The scope of the work of layout the editor among others, include:
- To edit, creatively design and perform layout work of a 60- 80 page of strategic human rights litigation guideline in such a way that external audience can easily understand and draw lessons from it.
- To Make sure are coherent and cohesive.
- Rewrite the text, if necessary, to make it understandable by the readers.
- Incorporate comments that will be forwarded by LHR.
- Assist publication production
- Determine index items and arrange them alphabetically or topically, indicating page or chapter location.
About You
Deliverable and time framework
The Consultant is expected to deliver overall quality and standardize ready to publish. The editor is expected to complete this assignment within two week, and the exact starting date will be the signing of the agreement.
Applicant Qualification
- Have research interests in common with the mission & objectives of LHR.
- Have a record of published research in scholarly journals as editor. Serving as lead editor will be a plus.
- Have substantial experience in reviewing manuscripts in respect of human rights.
- Be well-respected and actively involved in research.
- Five years of related professional experience in editing, proof reading and conducting and leading other editorial services including research reports, training manuals, guidelines, and official documents;
- Proven experience in producing publications with innovative graphic designs with the use of software such as Adobe Design Premium, In-Design, Illustrator, CorelDraw, web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash, etc.
- Experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management.
- Excellent written communication skills in English.
- Skill and experience to edit research written in English.
