Ärzte der Welt / Doctors of the World / Médecins Du Monde is a network of 16 humanitarian Non-Governmental organizations, working in health and medical aid in domestic and international projects. The focus lies on ensuring access to primary healthcare services, SRH / MCH services (incl. GBV) and psychosocial support. Furthermore, MdM is advocating for a universal access and rights to health services, especially for disadvantaged groups and people affected by crises and conflicts.

MdM has been working in Ethiopia since 1986, implementing different types of programmes from long-term interventions to emergency response. The current project in the Somali region by MdMGe is aiming to improve the access to and the quality of health care services (with a focus on sexual and reproductive health) and prevention of epidemics (incl. Covid-19) for the conflict and crisis affected population in two areas of the Region (Gerbo, Nogob Zone / Qoloji IDP Camp/ Fafaan Zone). Particular attention will be paid to the needs of women and girls by improving the access to SRH services, including GBV. Nutrition and WASH are integrated in this multi-sectoral approach and carried out by the local organisation OWDA (Organisation for Welfare and Development in Action).

The position is tasked to take a lead in community mobilization activities, including risk communication and community engagement activities of Covid_19 in the target areas. The Community Mobilizer will be responsible for facilitating the implementation of community-based activities at the community level in Tuliguled Woreda and Qoloji Internally Displaced Persons camp to ensure that communities are empowered, and they contribute to prevention of communicable diseases including Covid_19 prevention and preparedness.

Key activity areas will include:

  • Responsible to design, plan and implement risk communication and community engagement activities of communicable diseases including of Covid_19.
  • Mobilize and facilitate the engagements of community and stakeholders including local authorities through context-based community mobilization strategy
  • Support and facilitate network and coordination in the implementation of planned community mobilization activities to promote uptake of health (curative, preventive and promotive) services in the targeted project areas.

This job description covers the main tasks that are anticipated. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Community strategy:

  • In close collaboration with other MdM team members, contribute to design the community strategy and action plan for communicable diseases including risk communication and engagement activities of Covid_19
  • Promote and install sense of ownership among the beneficiaries through community engagement activities or design appropriate activities for the enhanced beneficiaries’ involvement;
  • Keep the key community stakeholders updated about the project

Community mobilization activities:

  • Plan for weekly/monthly mobilization/outreach and adjust to a flexible activity scheduling;
  • Organize and participate in all project events related to communicable diseases including Covid_ 19 prevention (campaigns; workshops, consultations with communities, etc.);
  • Organize awareness raising and sensitization sessions on various communicable diseases including Covid_19 prevention and response
  • In close collaboration with the MdM MHPSS staff, promote psychological well-being of individuals who require MHPSS services in the project locations, including those who have suffered S/GBV and Covid_19
  • Mobilize and facilitate active participation of community members, especially women in utilization of health services in the project locations
  • Support local authorities in planning of social mobilization, training activities and tools development as needed.

Coordination:

  • Coordinate and establish network for the social mobilization, when required and as deemed necessary, with other humanitarian actors operating in the same area;
  • Represent community level meeting, workshop, training on behalf of MdM and share report.

Monitoring and reporting:

  • Plan for and establish effective beneficiary communication and feedback system.

Place of office:  Field based position: Jigjiga (Fafan Zone) with travel to other project locations in Somali Region as necessary

Job Requirements

PROFILE REQUIRED:

  • Diploma in Health Education. A higher level qualification would be an advantage
  • Minimum two years of experience and trained in the area of social mobilization
  • Experience in social mobilization, community organizing, within Health in the Somali region.
  • Work experience on Covid_19 is an asset.
  • Excellent communication / facilitation skills
  • Understanding of gender equality and inclusion
  • Ability to access and analyze social dimension to adapt according to the context
  • Ability to classify and manage priorities – High autonomous is required
  • Experience/knowledge in the Somali region is preferred
