We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Gender Equality & Social Inclusion Advisor for the upcoming FCDO UK Support for Girls’ Education and Improved Learning in Ethiopia.

 

This position will be based in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia and is contingent upon award.  

 

Project Description

FCDO UK Support for Girls’ Education and Improved Learning in Ethiopia (2024-2029) is a new bilateral education programme in Rwanda due to be tendered between April – July 2024.  The programme will improve access for marginalized groups to education, improve retention and transition rates, improve learning outcomes, and improve school capacity and capability. The programme will operate across four pillars: 1) School leadership and support, 2) Equity support, 3) Teacher support, and 4) English language.  This post will span all four pillars and will be integrated across all workstreams.

 

Position Description

The Gender Equality & Social Inclusion Advisor will provide overall technical leadership in the areas of gender equality integration and social inclusion. S/he will collaborate with other members of the project team to plan and implement the annual Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI) Analysis and ensure that the results inform all project activities including the development of relevant indictors and work plans, particularly as they relate to girls and individuals with disabilities. Collaboratively s/he will introduce gender- and disability-transformative activities and/or scale up of evidence-based interventions promote gender equality and meet the needs of Ethiopian administrators, teachers, students, families, and communities. With capacity building as a guiding principle, s/he will engage closely with Ministry of Education officials and/or local NGOs on the design, management and monitoring of all field-based programs. The Gender Equality & Social Inclusion Advisor will assess program, technical and training needs, lead GESI analysis, review and adapt teaching and learning materials, provide training, and document/disseminate and contribute to evaluation and scaling up promising practices in facility and community settings that lead to increased educational access, retention, and completion for all students, including those most traditionally marginalized.

 

Job Summary/Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute the annual GESI analysis.
  • Ensure that the results of the GESI analysis inform monitoring and evaluation indicators and translate into the workplan and quarterly into the collaborative learning and adapting (CLA) activities.
  • Contribute to the design of assessments and evaluations related to gender equality, Gender Based Violence (GBV), School-related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV), and disability inclusion.
  • Plan and implement capacity-building activities related to GESI issues and sensitivity in collaboration with partner organizations.
  • Build GESI-related capacity of staff, sub-awardees, government, and partners especially as they related to the education sector.
  • Conduct and build capacity in GESI analysis (e.g., project partners, education officials, etc.)
  • Develop annual GESI action plans and budgets in consultation with other program team members, finance and M&E team, and monitor the implementation of these work plans and budget.
  • Maintain up-to-date statistics and GESI program data in collaboration with the M&E department for the project’s GESI related performance reporting.
  • Document best practices and lessons learned in implementing GESI activities in the project. Write reports, success stories, technical briefs and abstracts for presentations.

Job Requirements

Required Education Qualifications

  •  Master’s degree in gender, disabilities, education and development or master’s in a related Social Science field (e.g., psychology, human development).

Required Qualifications/Experience 

  • Master’s degree in gender, disabilities, education and development or master’s in a related Social Science field (e.g., psychology, human development).
  • Six or more years work experience conducting GESI analysis and integration, equity and inclusion in education programming, GBV prevention and response, and promoting women’s and girls’ empowerment.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with standard GESI analysis and integration tools and methodologies, and knowledge of evidence-based interventions to promote equality in education programs.
  • At least two years’ experience providing technical advice and capacity building in programs targeting girls and individuals with disabilities and experience in gender-sensitive and disability inclusive pedagogy.
  • Experience interpreting qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Strong background in Social and Behavioral Change working with community and other civil society groups in in education and community settings.
  • Experience working with a range of local government officials and school systems desired.
  • Computer literacy with standard business software (including Word, Excel and Power Point).
  • Willingness to travel within project region/country as needed to support training and scaling of project activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex environments with multiple interventions/collaborators, across different cultures, and lead diverse teams to deliver impact within agreed timelines across a broad geographic area.
  • Experience in leading/delivering FCDO-funded programming preferred.
  • Experience in the education sector in Ethiopia or the region.
  • Oral and written fluency required in English.
  • Oral and written fluency preferred in Amharic.
