The Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) is one of the first professional associations in Ethiopia and was established on May 17, 1948, G.C with 100 founding members through a formal charter granted to it by the then Emperor Haile Selassie I. EMA is member of World Medical Association since 1994 G.C.

In 2022, the Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) took a significant step towards financial self-sufficiency by establishing an income-generating wing (IGA). These strategy aims to achieve financial sustainability for the organization by supporting its core functions and activities to better serve its members and pursue its goals in the Ethiopian medical field. By achieving financial sustainability through the IGA, EMA can ensure its long-term viability. This stability translates to a stronger organization that can better advocate for the needs of Ethiopian medical doctors and ultimately contribute to a more robust healthcare system in the country.

Thus, the association is seeking competent and experienced business development manager for EMA’s IGA wing and would like to invite experienced, patinated, and competent candidates for the EMA-IGA Business development manager position.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and following the EMA policies and procedures, IGA Business development manager is responsible for managing the development of EMA-IGA(Income Generating Activity) and the development of Business plan for IGA and facilitating effective communication matters with  EMA. The Business development manager provides and serves Income generating activities from internal and external opportunities. He/She also serves as a business consultant to management teams and Business Departments unit. He/she is responsible for efficient and satisfactory provision of all Business development intervention services to EMA. The Business Development manager must be creative and enjoy working within the association environment that is mission-driven and results-oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong entrepreneur person and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Business Development Manager will have the ability to work within a team planed core activities, from conception to completion, and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities and confidential matters with discretion.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of EMA-IGA (Income Generating Activity) Business strategic plan.
  • Leads the development and implementation of a Business plan for IGA.
  •  Identifying and pursuing new business opportunities and partnerships.
  • Initiate new and maintain existing partnership networks.
  •  Conduct market research, negotiate contracts, and develop strategies to expand the EMA IGA customer base and revenue streams.
  • Create new business ideas with their feasibility.
  • Have to generate different kind of business models depending on the nature of the business.
  •  Identify and assess potential IGAs that align with EMA’s-IGA mission.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for health research projects, training programs, consultancy services, event organizing, and printing services.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Income Generating Activities wing, including budgeting, financial management, and reporting. Ensuring efficiency and profitability.

  •  Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private sector partners.
  • Lead a team of professionals to deliver high-quality services and achieve revenue targets.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Income Generating Activities wing and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and best practices to ensure the continued success of the wing.
  •  Following up the monthly, quarterly, annual tax payments and trade license renewal
  •  Ensure accurate and on time submission of all reports and administrative work.
  •   Monitor updates and scan the environment and seasons within the industry and make suggestions how these could be implemented so that the IGA will maximize the benefits.
  •  Display fair treatment with respect to disciplinary action and provide supportive documentations.
  •   Review financial statements for inaccurate data and make corrections within the following period.
  • Should use cost effective approach to execute the business.

Communication and Collaboration:

  •  Facilitating effective communication and collaboration within EMA.
  •   Interact with various stakeholders to foster strong relationships and promote a conducive work environment.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and reports for income-generating activities.
  •  Identify, communicate, and manage risks associated with income-generating activities.
  • Regularly reports the performance of the EMA-IGA wing to the executive director and Board members of the association
  • Collaborates with key staffs of the association to ensure the smooth functioning of the IGA wing and resource optimization

Job Requirements

Education and Qualification

Qualifications:

  •  Advanced degree in a relevant field such as business administration, Health economics, public health, or healthcare management or related field of studies, having MBA in combination with any of those listed educational background is preferred.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, execute, and evaluate complex income generating projects.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in business development and management, preferably in a profit-making organization and income generating activities of which at least 3 years of experience in leadership positions
  • Strong understanding of business development principles, including market research, financial management, and marketing
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in financial management, including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare industry in Ethiopia and experience working with government and non-government agencies and other partners
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Ethiopian Medical Association.

Payment modality

  • Monthly salary
  • Commission payment based on the performance but subject to a separate written agreement.
  • Transportation and communication allowance.
