Forests for Future (F4F)

The Forests4Future (F4F) project is part of a global project to support the implementation of the AFR100 commitments of Ethiopia, Madagascar, Togo, Cameroon, Benin and Ivory coast.  The F4F Ethiopia project aims to rehabilitate the ecological and productive functions of degraded terrestrial ecosystems towards landscapes and forests, sustainable wood production, sustainable agriculture, mixed agroforestry systems and the rehabilitation of pastures and wetlands. It strengthens the resilience of entire landscapes and improves the well-being of populations. The internship assignment is to give assistant to the project with particular emphasis on support in the monitoring of project activities with a focus on geo data collection from the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) intervention sites, verification and processing of existing geo data (shapefiles), management of attribute data from new and old shapefiles (completeness and correctness) as well as geo and excels data base management. the internship will last for three months from 1st of June 2024 to 31st August 2024 with possible extension until 31st of November 2024.

The tasks of the internship:

 Monitoring

  • Collect and Process Geospatial Data: Assist in gathering and processing geospatial data related to implemented FLR measures within the Forests4Future (F4F) intervention zone and from project partners. Utilize GPS devices for data collection.
  • Verify Georeferenced Data: Verify boundaries of existing georeferenced data (polygons) of FLR interventions using QGIS and on-site data verification methods.
  • Organize Shapefiles: Assign logical names to all shapefiles in the database, both new and old ones, for better organization and management.
  • Compile Attribute Data: Compile relevant data of each FLR intervention into the attribute table of shapefiles, ensuring completeness and correctness.
  • Analyze Data Consistency: Compare and analyze the data consistency between the geo data and xls database, checking for conformity, completeness, and correctness.
  • Training and Guidance: Coach and guide project partners in acquiring georeferenced data and processing it into shapefiles for the database.
  • Template Development: Assist in developing data and information collection templates, including providing Amharic translations as needed.
  • Intervention Status Assessment: Upon request, assess the status of FLR interventions to provide insights and updates.

Support the team in event organization, facilitation and coordination.

  • Support in taking attendances and discussion minutes during trainings and events.
  • Support the evaluation of trainings by the training participants.
  • Support in some logistics arrangement as per the need from the technical and Admin & finance team.
  • Support in availing and arranging training materials.

Support bridging communication.  

  • Support in Amharic translations of verbal communication during events whenever needed.
  • Support the team with drafting communication products.

To work with the Program according to needs and interests

  • To support the technical team in any other project assignment as per need.
  •  To contribute for the overall success of the project

Job Requirements

Required qualifications, competences, and experience.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must have at least a B.Sc. in remote sensing and GIS, or other close related fields.

Professional experience

  • applicants must be currently enrolled at a college or university and be on their final year or have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a bachelor’s or master’s degree at the time of application.
  • Very good knowledge on QGiS application for natural resource management
  • Experienced in the utilization of GPS devices and delimitation of Areas of Interests (AOI/polygons) and the verification as well as the upload in QGIS and the further processing of geodata.

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Advanced experience in geo and xls data base set up and management (management of attribute table is a mandatory skill)
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Certificates on advanced GIS trainings is an asset.
  • Very good Amharic and English language skill verbal and written.
  • Interest in Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR)
  • Dedication to work in development cooperation.
  • An independent way of working is very important.
  • Organized, high level of accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel regularly to the project area for data collection (etc.)
  • Stress tolerant and open minded.
  • Strong knowledge of MS packages (Excel, Word, and other MS applications, organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and being held accountable for meeting ambitious targets.
