Position:

The Knowledge Transfer Expert and Gender Focal works under the direct supervision of the Agriculture Project Coordinator.

Job Summary:

She/he ensure imparting information effectively to targeted audience. Will coordinate and supports zonal knowledge Transfer Junior Experts and Gender Focal with a strong interaction with all zonal and woreda team members as well as focal government agents. She/he is based in Soddo in Wolayta Zone, with frequent travels on the field and coordination offices of the three zones of the project (Hadiya, Kembatta-Tembaro and Wolayta).

Detailed responsibilities:

In order to disseminate proven solutions over a large area, as part of a scaling-up project: The Knowledge Transfer Expert role is concerned with imparting information effectively to targeted audience.

Main Role:  

In Short Term

  •  Inter Aide France relies on the transfer of skills through peer-to-peer training. The principle is to use the practical experience that people have developed at their own level (farm, Kebele, Woreda) to train other people who face similar issues.
  • This peer-training process includes exposure sessions, practical training as well as several days of coaching on the field. It can involve all types of stakeholders (farmers, CBOs, government workers, etc.). It therefore relies on a network of experienced actors having practiced themselves the proposed solutions who are mobilised to train their peer.

In the Mid and Long Term

  • Explore alternative communication and skill transfer mechanism to reach out larger audience.
  • The knowledge transfer expert by identifying the target audiences and depending on the type of message or knowledge intended to be transferred investigate alternative communication devices that provide farmers or agricultural development agents with knowledge and information about project scaling out intervention.
  • The responsibilities of the Knowledge Transfer Expert and Gender Focal will be to:

Coordinate and facilitate knowledge sharing activities and explor alternative communication and skill transfer mechanism  (up to 80% of her/his time)

  • Developing the training programs: organise transversal sessions with all the responsible Managers to update the project training plan, to co-develop the training content (objectives, key messages, content, method, place, duration, logistics) and ensure the inclusion/inclusiveness for vulnerable groups when relevant (women and poor in particular), identify trainers (experienced “peers” for peer-to-peer, at all levels), ensuring a common base for the three Zones;
  • Responding to the specific needs of a Zone: by helping the responsible Managers to formulate the training objectives and needs they want to address, and by facilitating the development of appropriate training, always based on this peer training system.
  • Prepare training material adapted to different levels of peer-to-peer trainings (posters, photos, tools, demo plot, exercises, guidelines, manuals) to support the learning process;
  • Beyond peer to peer in person training for selected and well developed activities explore alternative mass media broadcasting mechanisms such as the use of local radio, Mobile phone technology, and social media posts to reach out wider audience.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the quality of the training: regularly participate in training sessions to ensure that the training effectively meets the objectives set, to draw lessons for the next activities, when feasible collecting feedback from participants to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. Analysing data and reporting recommendations for improvements or modifications to future training sessions.

Support the improvement of gender mainstreaming in Inter Aide’s projects and the protection against harassment (up to 20% of his/her working time)

  • Host and lead an annual workshop proposed to all women staff, to get their perception on the compliance with ethical procedures and gender equity, and to identify areas to improve gender mainstreaming at project and organisation level.
  • Every six months, organise a meeting with the Referent Persons of each Zone on the application of the code of conduct and the complaints reporting and resolution system, and on any difficulties that these Referent Persons may have encountered, in order to improve the prevention and management of harassment and gender equity within the organisation.
  • Based on identified needs, facilitate the organisation of specific awareness-raising sessions for the teams on gender equity, harassment prevention and on Inter Aide France’s code of conduct.

Job Requirements

Experience, Interests, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Relevant work experience on organizing trainings for small holder farmers
  • Experience on designing and developing modules for adult learning
  • Skill on graphics designing and developing Posters, broachers and education materials
  • Ability to craft information and featuring stories in order to suit to appropriate audience
  • Experience on the use of different digital and mass communication will be a plus
  • Good interpersonal communication skills with smallholder farmers and other partners
  • Extensive practical knowledge about rural development intervention
  • Ability to plan, organise work and report to supervisors(s)
  • Must be prepared to travel regularly to the field
  • Good working knowledge of computer office tools (Word, Xl, PowerPoint, Internet etc.).

Qualification /Training

  • First degree or above on any social science, or Andragogy (adult education)
  • More than 5 years relevant experience

Additional useful skills/competencies:

Language: Excellent written and spoken command of English, Amharic and knowledge of local language (Hadiysa, kembata, or wolayita) will be plus.

As IAF team member, the Knowledge Transfer Expert and Gender Focal respects its internal rules, including its code of conduct. She/he represents IAF and as such should have a positive and decent behaviour toward all actors she/he might encounter during her/his duties (All IAF staff, Communities, Government officials…).

As a minimum, she/he should respect IAF working hours: 2h30 to 6h30 & 7h30 to 11h30 (Ethiopian time), from Monday to Friday.

The Knowledge Transfer Expert and Gender Focal is expected to take her/his responsibilities fully and to report any difficulty or need to her superior. She/he might be required to fulfil other tasks given by her/his superior even if not mentioned in the present job description.
