American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is an international non-governmental organization impacting millions of lives in more than 70 countries, leveraging a century’s experience confronting poverty and crisis around the world. AJJDC began working in Ethiopia in 1983, striving to advance the health and wellbeing of those living in the Gondar region.

AJJDC is looking for experienced and energetic Program professional and would like to invite qualified and interested persons to apply for the post.

 About the Project:

JDC has a signed medical program agreement with Federal Ministry of Health (MoH) and its clinic is located at Addis Ababa Burn, Emergency & Trauma hospital (AaBET hospital) which is an affiliate of St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC).

The program sees patients 5 days a week. It aims to concentrate on Spinal deformities, focusing on the young, poor and vulnerable to improve their spines and prevent disabilities. The program also aimed to help treat congenital and rheumatic heart disease, as well as tumor patients and some rare and neglected diseases. JDC aims to make available quality surgical and medical treatment for the poorest and most vulnerable children coming to its clinic from all over Ethiopia.

The major activity of the project is evaluating, diagnosing and treating patients with spinal deformities. Its major focus was also in treating rheumatic and congenital heart disease. In the past three years, JDC medical program did also treat curable forms of cancer and certain rare conditions like jaw tumor.

 The Medical Program in Residence is responsible for working closely with the medical team to evaluate and treat spine patients, lead the training programs for medical professionals, engage in early detection through the outreach program and plan the establishment of the Spine Centre.

 What will you do as the Medical Program Specialist?

  • Monitoring and caring for patients in hospitals and clinics that JDC works at in Ethiopia.
  •  Investigating, diagnosing, and treating the health conditions of patients
  •  Prescribing and reviewing patients’ medication
  •  Taking accurate notes, as a legal record and for other healthcare professionals to use
  •  Working with other doctors, healthcare professionals and management staff
  •  Educating people about their health
  • Teaching and supervising trainee doctors
  • Work with ECCE Learning Inc. to facilitate the Spine training and evaluation- online learning platform
  • Provide support to participating doctors
  •   Join trainings and medical mission exchanges
  •  Oversee training and program and outreach visits
  • Lead the creation of the local training syllabus
  • Facilitate and organize local and international trainings
  • Work with MoH to identify doctors and medical staff to participate in the training programs
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Work Unit:  JDC Ethiopia Medical Program

Report to:  Country Director (Direct Manager) and Medical Program Director (Professional Manager)

Location: Addis Ababa with frequent travel to outreach program sites, the job includes international travels

 Employment Duration: One year with possible extension

Job Requirements

What qualifications does this job require?

  •  We seek to hire a public health professional with at least 5 years of experience. Nero or orthopedic surgeon is preferable. Candidates with experience in working at government hospitals are encouraged to apply.
  •  Academic background: MD; JDC will also consider MPH candidates with relevant expertise
  • Proven experience in working in an international environment.
  • Preference if studied abroad or participated in professional visits or trainings abroad.
  •   Background in organizing, facilitating and developing learning and training materials. Preferable – introduction to online learning platforms Good understanding of participatory approaches
  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both in English and Amharic (oral or written).
  • Willingness to be based in Addis Ababa with frequent travel to certain towns in Ethiopia for outreach activities of the project. The job includes international travels.
  •   Preferable – introduction with early detection methods and prevention
  • Well organized, analytical and able to prioritize multiple tasks
  •   Willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge
  •   Excellent IT skills, MS Office applications
