The Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University is working in collaboration with the African Mental heAlth Research Initiative (AMARI), supported by the Wellcome Trust through the Development of Excellence in Leadership Training and Science (DELTAS) program.
Purpose:
This funding opportunity is to enable African countries to develop excellence in leadership, training and science in the area of research into mental, neurological and substance use disorders. To this effect, one PhD and one Postdoc opportunities are available in the Department of Psychiatry for 2024 academic year.

The research support includes a monthly stipend, funds to support expenses essential for the research and support to attend the annual AMARI scientific meetings and training courses. Fellows will have local and international research supervisors.

 The following will be an advantage for applicants to the AMARI PhD and post-doc fellowships: proven track record of research involvement, experience in mental health or neurological care, and peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals.

Job Requirements

PhD fellowship

  • The prospective candidate will register on the PhD in Mental Health Epidemiology program at Addis Ababa University
  • Research support will be provided for 4 years.

Eligibility

  • Prospective candidate must be medically qualified with specialist training or have at least a master’s degree (with thesis) in Mental Health, Public Health, Biostatistics, Psychology, Social Work or other health-related fields.

Post-doctoral fellowship

  • Research support will be provided for up to 2 years.
  • The AMARI post-doc fellow will be expected to apply for independent grant funding during the two years.

Eligibility

  • PhD in mental health or relevant health-related or social science field and at least three peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals
