Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is a publicly-funded, non-for profit German political foundation registered in Ethiopia as a “foreign organization” in accordance with the Civil Society Organizations Proclamation No 1113/2019. With offices in more than 100 countries, KAS promotes democracy, the Rule of Law, Social Market Economy and human rights and fosters political exchanges. For its new Country Office in Ethiopia, KAS is looking for a Project Accountant on a contract for a definite period of 18 months under the current funding period by the Federal German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) until 31 December 2022. The successful candidate would ideally start beginning of May 2021.

S/he is essentially responsible for the accounting of project expenses and the preparation of accounting documents; liaising with project partners, external service providers and associates and collect and book accounting documents, receipts etc. and with auditors. We strongly encourage women to apply for the position.

The Project Accountant works under the supervision of the Country Representative and Project Manager:

  • Handle of full spectrum of financial and cost accounting role
  • Prepare and maintain the books of accounts in line with KAS guidelines
  • Control payments (bank, cash and cheque) and manage the project box
  • Verify project costs and receipts in line with KAS/ procedures and guidelines
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial plans
  • Monthly reconciliation of advances/installments to project partners
  • Working responsibly with KAS bookkeeping system (FAVORIT) for accounting all project expenses (obtaining a qualification for the system after training)
  • Scanning of all relevant documents into the system
  • Ensuring that financial issues that require decisions or awareness of the Country Representative and Project Manager are promptly brought to his attention
  • Assist with procurement of project assets, goods and services for the project
  • Maintaining the integrity, confidentiality and safety of financial data
  • Ensuring that accurate and up-to-date records are kept on all financial activities in Ethiopia and if applicable other target countries
  • Communicating with KAS headquarters in Berlin, Germany in all financial management matters
  • Advance control of supporting document to project expenses submitted by project partners partners with respect to KAS guidelines and procedures
  • Assist Employees of KAS Country Office Ethiopia regarding internal controls, procedural problems, interpretation of financial reports, contracts, and various regulations
  • Supporting auditors with all relevant information for interim and final auditing
  • Transfer payments to partner accounts and pay invoices in agreement with the Country Representative and the Project Manager and based on the 4-eyes principle

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Certified degree in accounting/finance
  • Master’s degree in finance, business , social sciences or related field

Work experience:

  • At least five (5) years of relevant professional experience in accounting, controlling and procurement
  • Proven knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and terminology of accounting

Competencies:

  • Ability to work in an international environment
  • Able to work independently and highly meticulous
  • Well-developed team player skills
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail and to work under the pressure of rigid deadlines and conflicting priorities
  • Ability to communicate detailed accounting information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to participate as a contributing member of an international and customer-oriented team
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft office, in particular Excel
  • Willingness and openness to be trained and use the in-house accountancy and document management system of Konrad Adenauer Foundation

Languages:

  • Excellent writing and speaking skills in English (C1) are mandatory for this role
  • Fluency in Amharic
  • Fluency in French and other local languages of Ethiopia is an advantage
