About the Job

Background

Development for All (DFA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting and protecting human rights, social inclusion, equality of marginalized communities in Ethiopia. DFA is currently implementing a project aimed at strengthening the legal rights of marginalized communities, funded by the European Union and led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the Center for Justice, in the Benishangul-Gumuz region. As part of the project’s objectives, DFA seeks to raise legal awareness among underserved communities through the development and dissemination of simplified, accessible legal materials tailored to the specific needs of the target groups.

Objective of the Assignment

The objective of this consultancy is to support DFA by developing user-friendly legal materials to be used in awareness creation activities. The materials should be easily understandable to non-legal audiences and culturally appropriate for the communities in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Scope of Work

The consultant will work closely with DFA’s legal and communications team to:

  • Identify key legal topics relevant to the target communities (e.g., land rights, civil rights, legal remedies, access to justice).
  • Ensure all content is aligned with Ethiopian legal standards and frameworks.
  • Revise content based on feedback from DFA and project stakeholders.
  • Designing the materials in a simple, accessible, and practical format, ensuring clarity f with varying levels of education and disabilities.
  • Developing step-by-step instructions on self-litigation, including:
  • How to identify legal claims
  • Where and how to file cases
  • How to collect and present evidence
  • How to represent oneself in court hearings

About You

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Law (LLB mandatory; LLM preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years Demonstrated experience in legal writing, legal aid, or awareness creation.
  • Strong understanding of Ethiopian legal context, especially human rights and community rights.
  • Experience in developing legal guides or training materials for non-legal professionals.
  • Experience working with NGOs or marginalized communities is highly desirable.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and Amharic.
