Background

The works of Human Rights focused civil society organizations (CSOs) suffered as direct targets of much domineering legislative, institutional and political measures taken by the government for the past many years, especially before 2018 in Ethiopia. With the vision of creating a platform for strong and vibrant human rights CSOs for the realization of human rights and democratic values in Ethiopia, an engagement with Human Rights CSOs started in 2015and Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organizations (CEHRO) was registered on the 16th of March 2018 (re-registered as per 1113/2019 with registration number 3932). Currently, CEHRO has 17 active CSO members from regions of the country. From its establishment, CEHRO is determined and working to the advancement of human rights protection in Ethiopia by creating a common platform for human rights CSOs to articulate their voices and launch well-articulated and evidence based advocacy to expand the space for human rights CSOs and continue engagement with stakeholders as well as building the capacity of both the old and new human rights CSOs, to ensure effective human rights and democratic governance works.

In this respect, CHERO in partnership with Feteh Justice Activity designed a project to build the capacity of the standing committee of the House of Peoples Representatives (HoPR or parliament), the regional council members as well as CSOs. The project aims to strengthen the standing committee of the HoPR’s oversight role against the executive, raise awareness about the role of civil society organizations, and generate evidence on the implementation of recent legal reforms relevant to human rights and judicial reforms, as well as contribute to the creation of vibrant and vigilant parliamentarians who question and critically analyze every executive activity to ensure accountability and transparency. Specifically, the project pertains to enhancing the leadership capacity of members of standing committees at the HoPR, regional state and city council members to exercise their law making and oversights mandates efficiently and strengthen the constructive engagement of the CSOs-HPR/State Council. Hence, as one of the implementing strategy of the project CEHRO provide an internship opportunity at two standing committees and the spokesperson office at the HoPR and at Sidama and SNNPR as well as the South West regional State Councils Spokespersons Offices. In addition, CEHRO will facilitate internship opportunities for its head office and one Hawassa based member organization that will closely work with the three State Councils for (SNNPR, Sidama and South West Region).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, and communicate the strategic objectives of the project activities to HoPR and support CEHRO in the implementation of the project activity.
  • Collaborate and communicate successfully with HoPR, CEHRO, and different CSOs with direct supervision of CEHRO focal person
  • Develop and foster relationships between members of HoPR, CEHRO and different CSOs
  • Facilitate and coordinate the smooth relationship between CEHRO and member organization, Coordinate the three State Councils for (SNNPR, Sidama and South West Region) (for an intern based in Hawassa).
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize data and feedback to identify opportunities to improve the relationship between HoPR and CSOs.
  • Data collection for a research and facilitate the whole research activity
  • Compile reports about particular incidents, events, or updates about an important issue for the implementation of the project activities
  • Promptly respond to incidents and other events as necessary
  • Act as a positive representation of CEHRO and CSOs to the HoPR
  • Proactively solve and address issues that could hinder the effective implementation of the project activity
  • Monitor, support and follow up on the utilization of project implementation (e.g. training manuals, assessment reports etc.) by HoPR
  • Prepare weekly reports, briefing, training minutes, analytical documents and contribute to the production of documentations and reports
  • Other tasks as required

Location: with the total number of seven interns;

  • 3 interns based in Addis Ababa
  • 1 intern in Sidama
  • 1 intern in SNNP
  • 1 South West Ethiopia
  • 1 intern in Hawasa

Job Requirements

Required competencies and Qualification

Education

  • Enrolled student of graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in law, social/political science, international relations, journalism or other relevant area; or
  • Graduate student within zero-year of graduation of any of the above.

Competencies

  • Communication; Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication;
  • Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
  • Remains calm, in control and good humored even under pressure

Diplomatic Skills

  • Ability to write clear and concise reports

Language requirement

  • Fluency in spoken and written Amharic and English
  • Fluency in spoken and written working language of South West Ethiopia, Sidama, SNNP and Hawasaa, Amharic and English.
