Summary

This position, “WASH Consultant” at VSF Suisse is a key technical position that plays a crucial function in water infrastructure rehabilitation, upgrading and construction in the above intervention woredas.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate and lead WASH needs assessments and identification of WASH facilities for rehabilitation and/or upgrading.
  • Participate & lead WASH infrastructures technical feasibility studies for rehabilitation/construction/ solar upgrading.
  • Preparation of BOQs, drawings and tender documents for different types of WASH Infrastructures.
  • Support bid analysis, take off & payment sheet verification against on site taken measurements and preparation of payment summary & certificate.
  • Follow-up/Supervision of the activities related to the construction of WASH infrastructures in public institutions and communities.
  • Ensure the quality and quantity of materials delivered to construction sites by contractors or sub-contractors and maintaining proper recordings.
  • Ensure all safety measures are taken at site during construction work to avoid any incident.
  • the implementation hygiene promotion sessions in the targeted communities.
  • Identification, training, follow-up and monitor of activities of hygiene promotion.
  • Training of Trainers in hygiene promotion to WASH committee members, hygiene volunteers, teachers, health workers, woreda level health professionals etc.
  • Design and printing of IEC messages for community hygiene and sanitation awareness creation.
  • Organize and supervise the distribution of hygiene kit and PPE materials for health centers and at HH level.
  • Develop and communicate techniques for house hold water treatment in the target communities.
  • Assessing, Supervising and Reporting performance of the project

Reporting: Preparation of weekly/ monthly/ biannual reports to managers, including progress, key achievements and planning for the coming week/month/biannual.

Integration, coordination and cross cutting issues:

  • Ensure that construction work is integrated with hygiene promotion and community participation component, to ensure sustainability of the infrastructure built.
  • Coordinate WASH construction activities with other sectors of VSF Suisse, in order to integrate activities in the same geographical area and for the same beneficiaries.
  • Coordinate WASH construction activities with other local actors (governmental and non-governmental).
  • Ensure the integration of gender, child protection, HIV, environment and other crosscutting issues to the design, implementation and development of WASH construction activities, and ensure that activities take into account the needs of specific groups and individuals, especially children, the elderly and disabled

Requirements

  • MSc / BSc in Environmental & water resource engineering, Hydraulics engineering, Irrigation & water resource engineering or any related field of study.
  • Minimum 2- years for MSc & 4- years for BSc experience in WASH sector (Both emergency and development) in rural context.
  • Experience and ability to use Microsoft application (MS Excel, Word, Power point etc.) and engineering application software are advantageous (Water CAD, Water GEMS, Arch GIS, Auto CAD etc).
  • Experience in Construction related project management
  • Ability to establish strong working relationship with colleagues from different function and cultures.
  • Experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritizing high workload and multiple tasks in a high paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Capacity of proactively identifying and addressing issues related to project implementation.
  • Good command of English and Local language is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills & Willingness to work in remote areas.
