Chemonics International, a Washington D.C.-based international development organization, seeks to fill the position of Communications and Media Specialist for the anticipated USAID Strengthening Accountable Governance and Civic Engagement (SAGCE) project in Ethiopia. The $30 million, five-year project will aim to strengthen sub-national government, increase citizen engagement, and strengthen civil society oversight using locally led, problem-driven, adaptive approaches. The Communications and Media Specialist will be based in and is responsible for building the capacity of all target media entities in Ethiopia. Candidates should possess considerable successful experience in working with media institutions. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and updating communication and outreach plans, including the identification of key stakeholders and target audiences, which encompass a broad range of communications tools including traditional print, online, and social media.
  • Designing specific communication messages for dissemination to target audiences, ensuring compliance with USAID’s branding and marking requirements and graphics standards.
  • Serving as the project’s point of contact with USAID communications staff, including fielding requests for specific project communications deliverables.
  • Delivering technical assistance to media, government, the private sector, civil society organizations, associations, and other project stakeholders for the design and implementation of effective communication strategies and messaging related to agricultural policies and activities.
  • Formatting, editing, and submitting regular project communications and reports, per contract requirements (e.g., weekly bulletins, quarterly and annual reports).
  • Working with project’s technical staff to develop and produce project success stories.
  • Managing the project’s communications library, including specific communications, reports and other materials such as videos, photographs, and media clippings.
  • Managing the project’s media coverage, including presence in print, radio, TV, online journals and social media.
  • Supervising the activities of short-term consultants and service providers, working for the project in the area of communications, graphic design, photography, printing of reports and other documents.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (Master’s preferred) in a relevant field (journalism, communications, English) and 7+ years of professional experience, preferably with USAID-funded programs.
  • Familiarity with USAID’s branding and marking, and graphics standard requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing public relations, advocacy activities and public events in the public and/or private sector is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Oral and written fluency in English required
